Absence of the main character

Can someone remember me how we call a movie where the main character is absent ? completely or partially

Lime isn't the mc of The Third Man though.

present absence is the technical scriptwriting term I believe

main character can't be absent.

What, like Dangerous Men?

>My wife always tells me that she loves that unseen character trick

I believe we'd call it the "OP's Dad" trope

The Force Awakens

Is that a thing? I’ve never seen a film with a totally absent protagonist.

Do you mean the title character?
Maybe Saving Private Ryan counts as he’s not in it for a spell

He was in house of cards final season

Something close to that would be Ten Little Indians or Clue where the guy who gathered all the people is dies early or isn't fingered until the ending.

>Saving Private Ryan
Nah, he's not the main character, the captain is.

If TV shows count, Twin Peaks.

I guess Zodiac might apply here? unsure

Ok, thank i found the word by translating "unseen charcter" in french on wikipedia. That was an "arlésienne". I though that there were a word in english too.

Yes, for me it's movie like Saving Private Ryan, How I met your mother or Waiting for Godot
thx

Captain Marvel

In Fallen, Azazel does the narration and is primary antagonist, and really isn't revealed until the end.

The only case I can really think of is Psycho, in which the main character is killed halfway through the movie.
All other things like Third Man or Rebecca have a definitive main character even if the plot is set in motion by another absent and constantly-referenced character.

No Country for Old Men?

Godzilla (2014)

robocop 2 and 3. Robert Cop just disappears for large chunks of both films.
