What the FUCK was his problem?
What the FUCK was his problem?
Cowardice in the face of the enemy.
What the FUCK was the goddamn hold up Mr Sobel?

They sent him into the field when he should have been a desk jockey
He knew he was fighting for the bad guys of the war
This, he was redpilled
One of the big messages in Saving Private Ryan was that ordinary men were asked to do extraordinary things.
Upham basically is the expression of the idea of a person who's unable to meet that request, to the extent that he'd let his own comrade die screaming and begging for mercy, when he could've (as we, the audience, see it) "easily" saved him and killed the German.
It makes you ask yourself if you could really operate in any situation of extreme danger, without having the sentiment or the right training to do so.
If someone's getting the shit beat out of them by a bunch of tall guys, would you, if you yourself don't know how to fight and are not physically domineering? This is essentially what was asked of Upham, and he, probably like mos other human beings, failed to act.
It's always easy to say we'd never be like him. But you can't truly know until you're there, and your life is in danger.
>would you
*would you help
he saw the future & what it would be like if the US won
Raimi, we've talked about this.
>all the heroes die and the coward lives
what did spielberg mean by this
Him standing by while the nazi killed the other us solider who happened to be jewish, was Spielbergs subtle take on America standing by while the holocaust happened.
thinking of LOST season 5
... all of this... wasn't supposed to be our life? What if we... we had some other life and some some reason, we changed things?
Kind of this, 2bh. I'm a pretty big guy for you, both in the /fit/ sense, and in the height sense, and I always forget that regular people just aren't me. Sometimes I wonder "would I still have the confidence that I do right now if I was in a different body?"
I can stand up for others and tell people to fuck off only BECAUSE I'm big. My size is a safety net. If I were in a frailer body, I don't think I would be as """"courageous""""" as I really think I am.
That’s some good insight user
This
I remember watching this as young kid and asking my father why didn’t he do anything. It was actually a pretty legit learning experience for myself.
That's pretty much how it works. The brave usually die, cowards and lucky will live. Unless you are such an unkillable ruthless savage, sooner or later your luck is going to run out.
>If someone's getting the shit beat out of them by a bunch of tall guys, would you, if you yourself don't know how to fight and are not physically domineering?
Upham had a gun come on
it's a shame I don't see this guy in more bit parts
he was a typical liberal soiboy
He was a clerk placed in an infantry unit without warning, what do you think would happen?
Statistically speaking, you're more like Upham than anyone else in the unit. You're not supposed to think what he does (or fails to do) is right, but he's supposed to cause you discomfort, to make you feel powerless to give the movie a happy ending, because you probably are. And in his shoes, you probably would not even make it to the stairs. He's a humbling character like few manage to be, the only way you'd miss this is if you actually drank the war movie koolaid and think you can be a hero just like the characters in the movie.
Yeah, but he's so incapable of operating in that situation, because of his fear, that it's like he doesn't have one. Also bear in mind that he doesn't know what's going on in that room, and how many people are in there.
You very specifically need to train most people to kill their fellow man. Most people can't do it without training.
I think it was mainly fear for his own safety that made him unable to act. When someone cries out for help, and they're on you care about their safety, you'll want to help. But things get more complex when you be harmed by doing so.
That sort of cowardice isn't new to warfare. In pre-modern battles, most of the killing happened when one side broke and began running away. When people lost formation (which requires group participation), they became vulnerable to cavalry. Yet everyone ran away to try and save themselves.
