I'm not sure there was even any way this could have been prevented. Nitrate films deteriorate chemically. The technology to copy and preserve them probably didn't even exist before 1937. Similar things have happened before. Millions of glass plate photos from the 19th century were just recycled as glass windows.

That's a shame, it would have been nice to have them purely as a historical record. It's weird from something to be lost less than 200 years after it was made when we have so much preserved that's significantly older
From a purely entertainment standpoint, most of them probably sucked. They lost the era's equivalent of Mortal Engines and Holmes and Watson, I bet most of the big hitters were popular enough to survive
