>Novel: Scathing satire of colonialism and class warfare
really?

Yes, the aliens are a metaphor for the Brits in foreign countries and the Artilleryman goes on this huge rant about British society

>All these—the sort of people that lived in these houses, and all those damn little clerks that used to live down that way—they’d be no good. They haven’t any spirit in them—no proud dreams and no proud lusts; and a man who hasn’t one or the other—Lord! what is he but funk and precautions? They just used to skedaddle off to work—I've seen hundreds of ’em, bit of breakfast in hand, running wild and shining to catch their little season-ticket train, for fear they’d get dismissed if they didn’t; working at businesses they were afraid to take the trouble to understand; skedaddling back for fear they wouldn’t be in time for dinner; keeping indoors after dinner for fear of the back-streets, and sleeping with the wives they married, not because they wanted them, but because they had a bit of money that would make for safety in their one little miserable skedaddle through the world....

>Scathing satire of colonialism and class warfare
It wasn't satire it was a worry that there could be some greater power waiting to come and colonize us like the Brits did with half the world.

The entire point of the novel is that people were okay with imperialism because they were stronger and more advanced than the people's they discovered, and felt Britain had a right to conquer them.

War of the Worlds says, well, what if someone even more advanced than us came to Britain to colonise us? Something unthinkable at the time.

The Aliens were a metaphor for Germany's growing military power and British anxiety over the possibility of Germany replacing them as the number 1 empire in Europe.

Yeah my bad, satire's a real bad word to describe it

The commentary is still there, though

I like the remake desu. I did not find Dakota annoying, is normal a kid is scared shitless. The remake has many scenes and sounds that are iconic and memorable.

>satire
Hmm

What makes you think the Spielberg movie is not about the American Empire?
I wonder how he got away with it.

Was he ourguy?

The son is literally retarded and it comes off like some boomer screenwriter ranting about his Gen X kid

imperialism/colonialism != genocide

Not always, but sometimes.

This book was fun.

Why can't they just actually read the fucking book?
Then make a good adapted film

As across the coast they filed
Standing firm between them
There lay Thunder Child

>>Novel: Scathing satire of colonialism and class warfare
>>American adaptation: Dude we gotta fight ayy lmaos

Why would we want to talk to Americans in the 1950s about British colonialism and class warfare?

based and redpilled

FAREWELL THUNDERCHILD

This. Kid's a kid. Fuck that, any kid would scream about that shit too.

>That ferry transport scene

>Original TV show: funny
>American remake: laugh track

Is there a novel about the 'Germans' instead biding their time and getting all the places they'd tried to conquer to do everything they want anyway?

The American remake was made a few years after the 9/11 attacks and drew on the the anxiety that America was experiencing at the time. As did the Battlestar Galactica remake which also came out around the same time.

Moving swiftly through the waters
Cannons blazing as she came
Brought a mighty metal War-Lord
Crashing down in sheets of flame
Sensing victory was nearing
Thinking fortune must have smiled
People started cheering
'Come on Thunder Child'
'Come on Thunder Child'

yes I too watched that nostalgia chick video

Yep. Wells was huge anti colonialist back when nearly everyone was grabbing up land.

Japs took some of China. US took some Spanish land. English had some great land.

OP here, I literally haven't watched her in like 6 years

So you're saying the movies are better than the novel? I would agree.

Doesn't seem like a good analogy since most countries were better off under colonial rule. Especially somewhere like the Middle East which has been a hellhole without colonialism.

The Artilleryman goes on a huge speculative rant about how the aliens are hitting the military powers o they can take over, and what it might be like under alien rule

Hypothetically anons, if I were shameless enough to frame an illustration of the Thunderchild scene and hang it on the wall in my mancave, which is the least cringy one?

serious replies only pls

Do you? The Baby Boomer generation literally gave birth to Gen X. Have you genuinely only ever heard the word boomer from the horseshit meme?

Probably the official painting from the play soundtrack

Definitely go with the art from the musical, but I think the better piece of work is either the painting with the crows or the red weed

If you can find a hi-res version of it, do the cover art from the Jeff Wayne musical. Coolest illustration out there, and the musical is fantastic.

Attached: wotw.jpg (800x397, 44K)

The musical is one of my all time favourite albums, it still scares me to this day. The martian voices are creepy and the heat ray sound effect is chilling

UUULLLLAAAAAAAAAAAA

i found a pretty hi-rez version of the art. can't tell if it's been stretched or not, and it has a crease in the middle which needs shooped out

Attached: wotw hi res.jpg (1600x797, 257K)

Hmmm yeah it's been stretched vertically. Pic related is how it should look, with better coloring as well.

Downside is it has all the stickers and labels on it.

number one
it's your mancave
you put your shit in there
your comfy armchair, your music, your pics
it's not cringy
it's yours

tbf if he'd said something like "Where would I get an Adventure Time poster to hang up in my mancave" you'd be singing a different tune

>you'd be singing a different tune
Different strokes for different folks

>Dakota Fanning screams and blows your eardrums out
I liked her so much in that movie

>wow colonialism is bad

Meanwhile today we are becoming foreigners in our own countries and apparently that’s just normal

>>That ferry transport scene
DELET

Did wells or any version of the movie implied that?
Why the FUCK everything must be responded with some whataboutism?

Based YA poster

>things are different in different centuries

whoah

That happened because colonialism you fucking retard

Yes the whole point was what if someone bigger and badder swept into your country and swatted your fighters aside.

Heh... I bet that shitposter will stop shitposting now that you gave him some attention.

The sickeness in the movies was a metaphor for race mixing.

Are there people here that actually believe this or am I just being memed again like they do with Starship Troopers being about Fascism?

lol what a stupid thing to complain about
>PEOPLE SHOWING UP AND BEING MEAN IS BAD

>£995
hmmm

>Novel: Scathing satire of colonialism and class warfare

straight up lie discord tranny. it was inspired by british peoples fear of a foreign invasion going all the way back to Napoleon

You don't think they would've come here anyway?

Well, I guess you could argue that if not for colonialism, the west wouldn't have such a huge shameboner for wanting its own culture destroyed.

I thought Starship Troopers was a satire against fascism

>continental Europeans invade
>they all die from British malaria

>Dakota Fanning
