He was an idiot in the show. His downfall in the books wasn't stupidity but his autistic honorboner. I like how the show treats his decision to attack Casterly Rock as an ingenious plan that may win them the war whereas in the books, the plan is discussed early in book two and later dismissed as impractical. He actually would have ended up stalemating his enemies in the books as if he made it back to the North.
