There were two Blockbusters at roughly the same distance from my house, so sometimes we alternated on which one we went to.

God damn that picture brings back memories. I worked at a local video store a lot like that back in the late 90s. I probably have pictures like this if I ever go through my old hard drives. My father always hated me but he got me the most chad present ever. The first Kodak handheld digital camera for my college present.

At my school, we got coupons for Chick-fil-A for attendance. The shitter was the nearest Chick-fil-A was like at least an hour away. I used to skip all the time because of this.
But for reading books, in elementary school, there was this program where you'd have to take a test (on a COMPUTER) and if you passed the test, they gave you a quarter to a whole dollar at the end of the year. My sister and I were the best read kids at that school in the entire program. Read a ton of classic books, like all those Wizard the Oz ones, and made some good cash as a kid.

My buddies mom let us rent The Shining when we were 12 on VHS and I continued to rent it underage for a while until VHS went out of style completely around 2004. The blockbuster turned into a family video and then a credit union. The lady that always worked there saved the The Shining and gave it to me.

Oh hell yeah. My local rental place would also give you a free video game rental if you showed them you got good grades on your report card (good grades meant nothing lower than a B). That wasn't something the school did, though. And then, if you were on the principal's list (all A's), they'd take you out for lunch or dinner.
There were so many kids who just didn't give a fuck, though, and never bothered to try. I wasn't one. I always liked going for prizes. It made things fun. Plus it's like you're in school, might as well try to learn something.

It literally went from jump rope contests for presidential medals during Regan and Bush to bribing us with pizza and donuts under Clinton.

My ap calculus class met during 2nd period, which was when the state measures attendance. The state gave a 50 dollar prize at that time to each class with the best attendance. So once a month my senior year we ate 50 dollars worth of breakfast burritos. I think there were 7 guys, 2 girls and the teacher.

I don't think they had actual hentai, they just had 90s anime, and a lot of it was low budget adult titles that had titties in it. Like I remember renting one of the Golgo 13 videos there, and it had titties and sex, but I wouldn't call it hentai.
Speaking of, I kind of miss 90s anime on grainy VHS. I remember a friend trying to get me to watch Akira on DVD almost two decades ago, and I just couldn't get into how clean and clear it all looked (plus he kept pausing it to read all the notes they added to the DVD as a special feature).
