Dane Cook wasn't that bad. There are many much worse comedians but he got really popular and it became a meme to hate on him. He's like the Nickleback of comedy. There is so much worse popular music than Nickleback but for whatever reason people started trashing them and other people jumped on the bandwagon.

I think that it was his attempt at making it into Hollywood stardom with the woeful Good Luck Chuck and Employee of the Month (Only movie I can say I rooted for the "bad guy" 100% unironically) that did it to him.
To me it was a show he made about him touring with two fellow comedians. He came off as bratty, obnoxious and too full of himself. I don't think it was a persona, since the other two came off as fairly nice people. I went from a big fan to kinda hating the guy.

Dane Cook was unfunny for the same reason that Kevin Hart isn't funny. He makes loud noises at moments the audience doesn't expect, and because it was unexpected the audience laughs.
That being said I do recall Dane Cook telling a really funny joke during a set. Can't remember for the life of me what it was.

He’s ok. He’s not terrible, but he’s not great. Every once in a while he’ll strike gold like the Bible/tree joke, but usually his thing is high energy without much of a joke attached.

What's weird is that it became uncool to like him but at the time his comedy was parallel to a lot of mainstream comedy movies. Will Ferell/John C Reilly films have almost the same style of delivery as Dane's standup does. Those films are still held in high regard while Dane gets called "comedy's Nickleback".

Harmful if Swallowed and Retaliation were both pretty good.
