I remember seeing one of the gawker sites, the one with the black people, were really panning it. Not trashing it, that weird thing black internet critics do when they can't call something bad because it being written, directed and starring black people, but the message is critical on things like gang violence, black on black crime, etc, basically anything that doesn't make the villain out to be white oppression. Like how they hemmed and hawwed on calling Luke Cage bad, because the villain wasn't a white police officer and Luke Cage never faces adversity of racism and only deals with black criminals and shit, but they also couldn't outright say they didn't like it.

Well that's what they were doing for Us. Considering the trailer and the antagonists, I'm guessing the films message is critical about black families and expectencies black culture puts on each other, or something like that.
