Actually all the spore shit including the way the xenos bust out of the hosts is lifted straight from an early unused script for Alien 3 (written by the scifi novelist William Gibson) so in a way they are more advanced form of the xenomorph, or more precisely ware supposed to be.

It was inconsistent. In the field, they're pumping bullets into them left and right with seemingly no effect. Then later Captain Spaghetti kills one with a couple rounds.

Pretty sure Prometheus implies Engineers had previous contact with Earth and the Christ allegory in the mural heavily implies some form of very close contact with humanity. The moon pyramid could still be something that exists, we just don't know about it...yet.

This is precisely why it's technically a superior form. You can now use Xenos to wipe out native species of a planet, send down androids to start building the infrastructure, and then put humans on the planet once the androids have made it livable and the aliens have disappeared. The "Alien Queen" form of the Xenos with the eggs are more of a "total war"/"scroched earth" sort of tactic.

The real ultimate weapon is landing the spacecraft and initiating rolling mode.

Also keep in mind (if you're so inclined) that Ridley's version of the xeno uses a different canon ruleset than Cameron's.

This. Once again one of the biggest flaws of Prometheus and Covenant was the blatant lacking of helmets. I get they both state in the movies the air is breathable, but I doubt any explorative team ever would take off their helmets on a foreign planet

A real life comparison could be made to the development of plants, which early on were spore based but gymnosperms and angiosperms later found that seeds were also effective reproductive methods. But the development of seeds in some plants didn't kill off spore based plants, they still exist.

In Prometheus, it's well understood it was fucking stupid. In fact, the crew says don't take off your helmets. It's no more dumb than bringing the hugger on board in Alien.

Covenant, though, was flat out retardation.

Why not just use some androids to wipe out the natives? Androids in the alien universe built solely for fighting should be absolute monsters.

At least Prometheus tried to explain away the studio-mandated lack of helmets.

Facehugger system is a more guaranteed way for reproduction. Facehuggers unlike spores are alive and can seek out hosts themselves if something nears. Spore system needed more than just something coming near, it had to directly disturb the spore pod, then had to stay close by for the spores to slowly float into a host or had to directly inhale the spores like a retard, both of which are less guaranteed to happen. Spore based system was also more detrimental to the host, infected individuals showed extreme symptoms not long after initial contact like fever, dizziness, vomiting, etc. Putting your host in a vulnerable state like that so quickly isn't good hurts the ability to spread, and other organisms will likely avoid contact with the host (if not retarded). Facehugger system was less intrusive to the host's health up until the chestburster is developed, Kane showed almost no symptoms aside from feeling very hungry until maybe 1 minute before the chestburster did its thing. That insemination period allows for the host to bring the organism closer to other prey and away from possible sources of competition.
