He's not lying but he's not being candid, either. He was definitely undergoing some sort of medical skin tone evening process, but it was almost certainly pharmaceutical in nature rather than traditional "bleaching".

I'm not saying that the dude didn't have major body dysmorphic disorder likely exacerbated by his medical condition, but he definitely had that medical condition.

I'm studying to be a plastic surgeon.
It seems that in the picture, he had fat dissolved in his cheeks, which is a procedure that's not done any more because the active factor doesn't stop "eating" your fat for quite some time and the results can be really weird and uneven.
By the fourth picture it's apparent that he got some older generation implants that were supposed to substitute for the loss of shape in his face. It's possible, that the active ingredient also ate up some of the tissue in his nose and he got a additional surgery to remove the excess skin there, possibly trying to salvage his nose at the same time.
5th picture, some of his jawbone was sawed off.
Sixth picture, seems like there must have been some infection after his nose was fixed, the sick "dimples" in earlier pictures are a dead giveaway for it. I'm guessing that the surgeon transplanted some of his arm skin to be used on the nose to fix these dimples, but as a result the nose became even smaller visually.

Still, they thought he would still look similar to his thriller days. It just wouldn't work with the stuff he made in 1995, 1997, or 2001.
