Thing I find interesting about this series is that the first movie was sort of sci fi with spaceships and whatever, but you never really understood how much sci fi it had until Chronicles, which was a huge leap in lore and setting... then Riddick goes back in time and recreates the first movie in a different scenario and that's how it ends.
DESU, I liked Chronicles the most, because it had the most interesting setting and characters. It felt like a space epic, the other two just felt like random "kind of" scary Alien style movies.

Third one wasn't that much of a remake of the first one. It spent lots of time on Riddick doing tough survival shit on his own and also on the mercs.

Same premise, though. Riddick is captured (but not really), people try to sell him out, he escapes alive with only a few of the people left.

First movie:
Monsters that can see in the dark chase people down

Second movie:
A limitless intergalactic army where the leader is half dead and there's an air elemental just Dameing about; Riddick falls his way up to take all the power for himself.

It's like if Starship Troopers was the sequel to Alien

And monsters that come out at night and kill everyone.

But this time he can cure lesbianism

Yeah, it's weird how much of a shift the second movie is from what was established in the first one.

I believe the plan was to make the Riddick series into a massive sci-fi/fantasy franchise, but the second movie bombed in the box office so it got cut down severely.

Desu they should just make one more movie, wrap up the plot and end it. Unless they actually know they can get more, because otherwise they're never going to finish it. Vin is 50. Making one movie every 10 years isn't good enough
