College's were reorganized and turned into a money making racket at some point after WWII (60s or 70s?). To siphon off money and meme the lower and middle classes into believing you need a college degree or else you will never be successful and viewed as low class worthless scum. Everyone bought into it and the tuition prices exploded. Prior to this universities primarily only existed as a type of "extended schooling" for children of the wealthy and most people didn't care.
