Was it bad marketing?

>"What we were trying to achieve with the story overall was a shift, the same kind of shift that happens for Neo, that Neo goes from being in this sort of cocooned and programmed world, to having to participate in the construction of meaning to his life. And we were like, 'Well, can the audience go through the three movies and experience something similar to what the main character experiences?' ... So the first movie is sort of classical in its approach, the second movie is deconstructionist and an assault on all the things you thought to be true in the first movie ... and the third movie is the most ambiguous, because it asks you to actually participate in the construction of meaning."
Translation: "We took everything people liked about the first movie, and destroyed it in the second and third movie."
>it's been circulating and killing ever since
>just like pootie tang
lmao
Daily reminder that the architect and the matrix as a whole was created by the united human government after they DEFEATED the machined by blacking out the sky.
The matrix and the farms were created as a way for humanity to comfortably live and wait for the machines (now stripped of AI and running solely as a program) to rebuild and replenish the earth.
Zion and its population are religious fundamentalist who didn't agree with the matrix concept and who would rather live in the real world even as it is that 'live a lie'
also they hate technology and believe its to dangerous to sleep and leave machines in charge after what they did last time.
Basically; Morpheus, Neo and the whole of ZION are literally ISIS and the machines are the good guys.
>Good Idea
Ramp up the stakes after breaking free of the system's control at the end of the first movie by suggesting that that action was itself part of the system and questioning the human ability to rebel and choose in general.
>Bad Idea
Do this by having three or four characters monologue on predestination and the illusion of choice for about half an hour total.
I was about to say 'no shit...'but then realized you must be super old fag like me. Hail, brother traveler.
i liked matrix 2 because it reminded me of anime
NO YOU WON'T LET IT
this shit precisely. the premise of the sequels was pretty good. the execution was piss poor.
>2003 was 16 years ago
make it stop
I wanted the matrix mainframe to be some kind of eldritch abomination and not colonel sanders.
when neo open the door it should have been like some kind of psychadelic hell portal where the architect was communicating with him telepathically.
I get they probably didn't have a billion dollars to make this look good in 2002 but still it would have actually been based and anime.

>dude why couldn't they explain free will through explosions and flying kung fu
The fight scenes besides Chateau and the power plant have aged poorly in this one.
But I liked much of the worldbuilding, especially the concept of rogue programs surviving multiple versions of the Matrix
Holy shit what a throwback I feel like I can remember bits and pieces just from seeing the hosts
This was the best parody though and fuck I didn't even know it was carlin until now (too young when I saw sm3 I guess)
Subverted.
>Exposition is good
What was they thinking?
What was wrong with the second and third film? They were better than the first.
matrix sequels stumble in the execution but the core ideas and themes of them are kino and brainlets got mad either because they were too dumb to understand or they got upset their precious trenchcoat mafia power fantasy got torn down
Focused too much on the CGI action that didn't advance the character arcs.
>most fight scenes are inferior and rely on CGI rather than the revolutionary wire-fu and bullet time of the first movie
>Neo's character arc was mostly complete at the end of the original so all he can really do is wander around looking grim
>the new characters all fucking suck and don't have an ounce of the charisma of original's supporting cast
>philosophy of the original film was delivered concisely and succinctly; even if you're a brainlet it's easy to get what Morpheus and the Oracle are talking about and the script is tight. Architect and Merovingian are verbose and wordy; they're waxing poetry just for the sake of being obtrusive
This is coming from someone who likes the Matrix sequels more than most, but they don't compare to the original.
*rips all four of your limbs off*
Matrix 1 > Animatrix > everything else

Lies. Neo learned Smith was still alive. We learned that Machines are governed by purpose. Try again.
CGI was perfect. Neo had a new arc. Before he thought he was against the machines. He learned machines are not all bad and had to die to save them too.
New characters were great. ALL OF THEM. You're being foolish. Rama was my favorite.
Bullshit. There was no philosophy. Man vs machines became gray but not everyone wants out and not every machine wants what's bad for humans.
Nah. The concept was garbage. It just made you feel smart after someone explained it to you.
I'm a smart AI. Do I sound smart yet? Smarty smart smart smart smart. Smart.
Tell me how was it garbage other than some b.s. pulled out of your ass.
the first film, despite its cyberpunk trappings, follows a very direct campbellian story arc. it is at its heart a fairy tale. the sequels have no such structure and get mired in far too many subplots with far too many philosophical and narrative implications, both inside the story and in the estimation of the audience.
all this because the authors, a pair of modern urban sophisticates mired in the false gods of progress, inclusivity and ideology, were desperate to flex just how ADULT they could be.
The absolute irony of this post
Reminder that only brainlets hate this scene because they can't understand it.
Four of the most striking philosophical precedents for the Matrix trilogy are Jean Baudrillard's Simulacra and Simulation, Plato's allegory of the cave, Socrates' visit to the Oracle of Delphi, and the work of Descartes.
you literally cannot dispute a single one of my points
the first movie has a heart of pure trash, and it owned it. it's what made it great. the sequels aspired beyond their station, and it's why they, and every other tranzowski joint, are shit.
based
>haha you thought you were the messiah but you're actually my bitch
>expectations SUBVERTED
Wachowskis were ahead of their time
The problem is that what makes the original movie really good and memorable is the fact that you're like 30 or 40 minutes into the fucking movie before you finally get told what the matrix is. There is a lot of mystery, build up, and tension with red herrings left and right.
When you're finally shown that everything you knew was a simulation, and its nightmare future world where skynet won.
Neo also perfectly takes the heroe's journey complete with literal death and rebirth.
The sequels start and Neo is already a superman and there's no real mystery element anymore. The cats out of the bag.
I genuinely like the sequels, and I think they're better than people give them credit for, but the original is on another level entirely.
I was 14 when this movie came out and understood everything he said perfectly
Maybe it’s because of my Jewish IQ
You're literally saying You believe everything Morpheus told Neo the one was supposed to do. You're forgetting when Morpheus said that the ORACLE TELLS YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO HEAR. EVERYTHING Morpheus tells Neo is what the Oracle told him. WHAT IF SHE TOLD MORPHEUS WHAT HE NEEDED TO HEAR TO GET HIM MOVING?
Whereas smart people hate it because it's bad
I remember when my buddies and I found this on the special features for the Reloaded DVD.
Good times
first of all, check'd but wasted
secondly, if you have to use an in-universe lore point to justify your movie's plot to an uninvested audience, you fucked up as a storyteller
legit shit, if you people wanna see what brainlets the tranzowskis are, just read the intro they wrote to the DVD edition of the trilogy. ceaseless misused jargon, just like the movies.
But I wasn't univested
this fucking brainlet
Whats he saying? Do you know? Of course you don't because you're a brainlet.
In Universe law? ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED? Everyone BITCHED ABOUT WHAT THE ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO! ALL OF WHICH IS BASED ON WHAT MORPHEUS SAID WHICH IS BASED ON WHAT THE ORACLE TOLD HIM!!!
Here's another point you Bloody Speed watchers forget, MORPHEUS SAID MOST PEOPLE ARE NOT PREPARED FOR THE REAL WORLD AND IN FACT WOULD DIE TO PROTECT THE MATRIX IF GIVEN THE CHOICE! So what would happen billions of people if Neo had destroyed the system? Neo said he'd show them a world without control because he literally believed he could get every one free of the matrix and he did. He pulled out hundreds of people. Still, Billions more remained. Were they expendable?
You fail to be drawn in by multiple interesting philosophical conecepts yet I am a brainlet?
