Yea they're pretty great. The first one is presented as a more typical fantasy novel (albeit a VERY creative one in terms of ideas) but as the series goes on they explore deeper subjects like metaphysics and religion. They are deliberately written like that to lure you in thinking it's a Harry Potter or Narnia type story. Not perfect, and not for the easily offended when it comes to criticizing the Bible but an interesting series for sure.

I'll put it down to preference. Having read both, there are different messages intended. Narnia is a positive view of cyclical gnosticism, while Pullman argues that the cycle must be transcended. Kind of like snowpiercer or the matrix.

Even if this flops, they will keep trying, because the series is gold and deserves it.

Imagine going through 2 of the lotr books just to be told in the third that Sauron isn't the big bad, it's another guy called barry. Now imagine that in the last act as the swords are flying and battles are raging that barry slips on a banana peel, dies, the ring disappears on it's own and everyone just kinda goes home.
