The movie has probably already made 400, a lot of the international box office numbers are not fully up-to-date yet.

Current estimates are showing her coming in just shy of 400m around 390-395m. Captain Marvel took a lot of wind out of her sails and she's coming in behind Lego Movie 2 now, which is even older but has a slightly younger demographic than Captain Marvel so it isn't being hit as hard.

Rob Rod was what was needed for this movie at this point in time. If you think things are grim waiting for a sequel now, imagine if the movie had been twice as expensive and not really done any better.

Robert Rodriguez painstakingly worked on that final Motorball chase scene for two years. Every shot of that was meticulously worked over by him. It wasn't some accident that all these hyper complex cyborg designs remained readable through the breakneck pace of the action. That kind of stuff is Rodriguez's specialty and I think he fucking nailed it in this movie.

yep, I'm honestly kind of glad this movie changed my perception of RR almost singlehandedly. I like Dusk Till Dawn and Desperado is dumb but enjoyable but didn't think much else of him. If he directs the sequel, I absolutely have no issue with it.

Avatar is a bland movie with a plot of a Disney cartoon that is remembered for making 3D popular (temporarily) an not much else.
I still have no idea why it has so many planned sequels, and I probably wouldn't want Alita to take its place.

I kinda don't because then we'd have late 2000s Jessica Alba as Alita rather than Rosa and I just don't think I could enjoy the movie on the same level without her in the leading role.

I still contend Jim's movie would have done better critically and financially but it wouldn't be as fun to watch. You watch a scene like this and it has an energy to it and a fluidity to the action yet it's all so readable and clear that's Rodriguez, that takes a lot of choreography work and good eye for action. I just don't think we'd have action this good under Jim. The sci-fi elements would probably be handled better, like we'd probably get longer shots of the URM ship and the berserker body's nano-tech because that's the kind of stuff Jim likes to focus on.

That is true but it was Robert who picked her out and sent the audition to Jim. If Jim was the one doing the casting would he have picked her out of the line up? Maybe, maybe not. If he made Alita instead of Avatar back in 2006-9 I think this would be a much worse film.

Looking ahead at the sequels with the Barjack and tuned stuff I think that material is fucking GOLD for Rodriguez. The teen romance stuff in this movie was weak, because that's not really his forte, I think if Jim was doing Hugo/Alita it would have played very much like Jack/Rose or Jake/Nateri from Titanic and Avatar and it would have gone over very well with general audiences.

The shootouts in Deserado's are some of the best choreographed, edited and shot action scenes in western cinema. Not to mention wielding the hyper-masculinity of Banderas in such an intense way that nobody comes even close.

Robert will be fine. He knows Alita is basically Cameron's baby he had for 15 years, Robert was only involved for the last 5 out of 20. He does deserve a lot of the credit though, for the budget costs and specific creative choices. A lot of his style is over the movie.

But, your faulty logic would be like saying "we can't put a safety on the gun! That compromises it's full potential as a firearm!" Not if it's so dangerous that it does more harm than good for the user and for innocent bystanders in the immediate vicinity. Same thing. Anyone who doesn't have a history of violence or compromising mental disorder, who passes background checks, and who is at least 18 years of age will be able to a get a gun just fine.

Rodriguez got away with a lot for his PG-13, he bisected a dude, crushed a girls face in, alita punch another guy's face in with blood dripping from her fists, cut a human in half complete with blood, put a guy through a woodchipper, I think the only modification you need to make to that scene to make it play for PG-13 is change the blood to blue.

Based. Something the fat cats forget about Avatar is that it was THE movie that started the 3D trend and all that shit. I was literally 11 when that movie came out and I remember how everything started being shown in 3D afterwards. People went to see Avatar for the spectacle of seeing it. I can't name a single character or event that happens in the movie— I remember enjoying it— but I'm worried about what will happen to Alita when the Avatar sequels drop and fail to meet the impossible expectations placed upon them.

I think a big part of the problem is the time gap as well. A big part of what made Avatar exciting was the spectacle of seeing it on the big screen and a lot of the people the sequels will be marketed towards are too young to remember seeing it.

I never remember wanting a sequel when it came out. I enjoyed it, but the story felt complete.
