Is it a meme or do Americans genuinely think this film is even remotely scary?

it unironically was a different time, that movie used to be scandalous
also you're a fucking pleb if you're implying it's not good

I said nothing about it being good or not. Just about it being not scary.

What movie is scarier than the exorcist?
The whole theme, demon posession of a young girl is scary as fuck.
It contains very disturbing imagery.
It has subliminal shit. Like the demon faces that randomly show up.
It's use of sound is very effective and well made.
Answer my question.

Again, the person you’re responding to had it right. The Exorcist was horrifying when it was released.

i don't know, shining? i don't remember the exorcist as being scary in any way. the book scared the shit out of me when i read it with 12 tho.

it has not held up (as) well for modern viewers. there are some great shots in it like the one on the cover (pure kino). the cast does a good job. the premise itself has not aged poorly, but the voice of the demon and some of the deliveries are kind of hard to take seriously. older crowds still insist this is the scariest film ever made, i think it's just a difference in times. sometimes that can happen. also a large portion of the viewership at the time definitely believed in demons

The first time I watched it I was 18 years old, on the year 2003 and I couldn't sleep well that night.
The movie was disturbing aa fuck to me and it still is.
To all the people that say the movie is not scary or whatever I ask: what movie is scarier than the exorcist?

the book is absolutely scary, even more so than the film. and the opening of the movie in iraq is kino

This. The Exocist is a very well made film, entertaining and unsettling.

The shining is great and scary, but I can watch it no problem without being disturbed.
I can't watch the exorcist without being disturbed, to me it's just much more disturbing and intense.

It is scary you faggot
Its a genuinely disturbing film. Viscerally it has become somewhat dated but that isnt its strength anyway.

it's not scary, but influential, the way jaws or star wars were.

only soiboi faggots like jay bauman thing this movie holds up. just about every other friedkin movie is better

I watched its parody first so maybe that's why I didn't find it scary myself

it's a meme you irish cunt

disturbing yes, scary no. children doing fucked up or weird stuff are always disturbing. like zombie kids in both dawn of the dead movies or the girl with all the gifts.

Were entering semantic territory and it ultimately depends on how youre defining 'scary'. In terms of an immediate visceral reaction of fear, yeah, sure, the exorcist has aged and it cant really compete with its affects. However, in terms of making you uncomfortable and anxious and with a deeper seated more cognizant fear it still holds up and puts many things to shame.

Not the scariest horror but clearly the best horror.

the hospital scenes are still genuinely disturbing

the scene where blood squirts out of Regan's neck still makes my fucking skin crawl every time i see it

Considering this movie was made when saying Damn on Tv was considered degenerate and immoral and America was predominantly Christian, this was one of the worst things you could show the general audience.

People just pretend it's scary to look cool

gotta maintain my anonymous reputation

If nothing else, the part where she goes down the stairs will always be disturbing for reasons I can’t quite explain.

unironically the scariest movie I have ever seen is the first half of The Strangers

for me? it's rosemary's baby or the shining

>Implying Friedkin hasn’t batted 1.000 in the kino department.

You dont think this is creepy?

Gonna have to check that out.

there is footage out there where people were genuinely fainting and running out of theatres, screaming, hyperventilating.

it was a different time. people were not as brutalized and cauterized as they are nowadays.

>do Americans genuinely think this film is even remotely scary?

I've seen countless demonic possession movies, and none have affected me on the level that the original Exorcist did. It was all about Friedkin's direction, and the talented crew he worked with.

watched the redux in Cinema, it was scary.
If you haven't watched this on the silver screen you don't know what scary is.

depends on what scares you, fear is subjective.

only genuinely creepy moment in the film. opening sequence in iraq is kino af. rest of it borders on self-parody.

I think it's just because it's so sudden, and out of left field. Not to mention it's over as soon as it begins.

>it's an adult neet watches a movie in his computer with constant pauses to shitpost and in broad daylight while mom makes tendies in the kitchen next room then makes a post saying some old movie didnt scare him episode

>it unironically was a different time
this desu, it was revolutionary as fuck when it came out, being the first (or one of the first) movie to deal with demonic possession and to display very gory images (for the time being)
also, objetively speaking, it's got some great shots (the one with the statue in the girl's room is GOAT) and builds up a great ambient

>fuck me jesus, fuck me.

I wanna get down on my knees and start pleasing jesus, i wanna feel his sweet salvation all over my face

Different time.

There’s just something uncanny valley about it.

>doesn't name a single alternative to all the movies in the picture

The shining isn't scary you fucking memers

it was back in the day.

What is it about the 70s that is so fucking creepy?

>The Strangers
That movie sucks and fucks. You have dog shit taste.

hereditary was not uneventful

hippies

All the white people.

it's bait, stop replying to that shit. the witch and hereditary were two of the best horrormovies of recent years.

did you watch the video? it's full of black people and hispanics.

it's not scary, but for the time it came out it really was

still a great movie though

To steal a joke from MST3K, I think it's because every frame of footage from that era looks like someone's last known photograph.

kek, not bad.

only movie to date along with demon knight that still scares me. Ive killed 3 men and done worse in my time in the army and nothing phases me but this.

Catholics are like fantasy beings in burgerland

>the witch
yes
>hereditary
"No!"

I don't think it's even close to being like one of the best horror movies or anything, it's just the only movie to genuinely unsettle me in recent memory

>it's bait
nice delusion

Film has gotten less scary over time but it's a pretty great movie. Still leaves unsettling feelings afterwards

Man this is a really fitting description but why? Is it because of the quality of film? It's kinda fuzzy but not in a cozy "Chungking Express" kinda way. The colors look all washed out and grey/brownish and the clothes and interior decoration reminds me of something you would now only find in an old folks home.

Is that it?

bump

Kek never thought about it this way, I always felt like even kid's movies from the early 70s had an unsettling quality.
