It's literally explained that she's a combat model cyborg, quite possibly one of the most advanced models ever constructed, so combat skills are part of her nature, her repressed memories are resurfaced by exposure to the URM ship she was stationed on, and her talents at motorball are an extension of her combat skills.

No I didn't hate it. I just thought the art wasn't as impactful as the original series, he started using straight forward digital shading more and the manga lost a bit of soul as a result.
I can't speak on the story of LO as I haven't finished it, but the start wasn't as good IMO. I still appreciate it very much though though and the fight scenes are much more readable in LO.

The beginning with the civil war and stuff is pretty cool but it turns to shit when it becomes an interplanetary karate tournament and pauses the story for like a year to tell some pointless flashback story about big tiddy mummy vampire. It doesn't even feel like the same setting or characters anymore by that point. I read that Kishiro basically lost interest and just ran with whatever ideas fans submitted, and I can believe it.

Y'know, the core story has potential. It's a sci-fi heist to break into brain storage and get Lou's brain back, using a futuristic fighting tournament as cover. I'm fine with that, it's not the worst concept. If it was cyborg warriors like Makaku and Kinuba or the motorballers fighting the Tuned copies or Nova's henchmen, I'd be OK with it.

I have a lengthy post to make after 5th viewing
1) The one early glimpse of who Alita really is should be well known - it's the scene where she saves the dog from a Centurion. There are two more - first is where she is sneaking up on Ido and Gerhard after waking up for the first time. Normal person would probably approach them directly, but Alita's nature as a soldier suggested her do to a little recon first. Another one is where she becomes desperate to have her revenge on Tanji - a warrior does not give up.
2) Ido suggests twice that he knows what Hugo does for living. First scene is Hugo's introduction. Ido says

And then he says they should go home. Second line is

Back when Hugo got his new body.
3) There is a blue haired cyborg girl in Chiren's introduction scene. She looks as if her body was just a jumpsuit with metal parts printed on it. To be fair, many background characters looked funny.
4) The scene that was always funny to me was Chiren smashing a bug with her hand and leaving the glove right on the table. The line that I didn't notice, but comes back in a gruesome fashion is

It is not possible that Hugo would hear it. There is only one logical conclusion, and it is that Nova is seeing through Alita's eyes. He literally is seeing everything. Even if she seems powerful with her berserker's body and sword, Nova knows her every single move, making him a truly worthy enemy, and shutting up everyone claiming that Alita is a Mary Sue with no real challenge. She actually has to beat someone who knows exactly what she's going to do next.

" I don't need your permission to live" "others might, like your doctor ido, or your hugo" It's established earlier that Nova is keeping Grewishka off the bounty listings so here he's doing the same for Alita so he can have more fun watching her suffer because "I've found the only way to enjoy immortality is watching people die"

This is a really huge stretch, and even I barely believe it as virtually all of the evidence points to the contrary, but I feel like this might still leave the door open just a crack to the Secret of Zalem plotline.

Let's say we ignore Chiren completely, despite the adaptation being chiefly based off the OVA. Perhaps Nova doesn't know she has a brain and assumes she is chipped like other Zalemites since she came from there (presumably) from falling down the scrapyard. Maybe there is more to his infatuation with brains than we're led to believe. It might not be the same plot line point for point, but I could see it being changed around a little and still being an important point to the greater narrative, even if it's purpose is changed slightly.

It's not just carrying the weapon, it's everything.
The way she holds her sword, the way she walks, the way she screams "VECTOR!", all makes it pretty obvious that she has hostile intentions.

Probably, so long as they're not screaming "VEEEECTOOOOOR" at the top of their lungs while brandishing the weapon and moving in a threatening manor, it's the combination that makes it so the centurions could detect hostilities.
