The latter is ridiculous, the former is a damning conclusion for people who oppose them.
Most people who oppose these things refuse to recognize how scary the things we vaccinate for are. I think eradicating smallpox was a pretty smart thing to do, in my opinion.

I think it's really another case of people making decisions based on their gut feelings instead of either learning about the science behind it (which hard because medical, biochemical and microbiological publications are difficult to read) or trusting people who know more about these things.

It's a general trend that science is getting too complicated for common people and common people are no longer trusting people who dedicated a better part of their lives to studying these subjects. It's exactly the same thing as with the flat earth people.
