And then there's Cornell, which is a decent enough school, but often considered an "Ivy" in-name-only, since it is a Land Grant and was founded almost a hundred years later than the others (all of the others were founded before the Revolutionary War, while Cornell was founded after the Civil War). Cornell is arguably less qualified to be an Ivy than most of the so-called "Public Ivies."

The problem isn't that they paid money to get their kids into school. That shit happens all the time. The Simpsons even made a joke about it in the 90s, about Harvard needing its own international airport in exchange for accepting Mr. Burns' son. The problem is that they falsified documents, paid to have people either take entrance exams for their kids or to have their answers corrected afterwards, and even went so far as to have their kids photoshopped onto sporting teams to fake extracurriculars.

A degree from a top college in the USA is one of best ways to get a good job in America. A degree also protects them from criticism about nepotism. Without it it would be obvious to anyone that they're just a dumb kid who got where they are because of mommy and daddy, with a degree it shows that they "earned" their place.

The meta for a long time has been that if you don't want to work in retail or flipping burgers you need a bachelor's degree. The schools tell you (and your parents) that it doesn't matter what degree, because employers really just want a degree to weed out the mouthbreathers who graduated high school (which is almost impossible to fail to do here unless you deliberately drop out), but couldn't get into college (there are so many colleges in America that you have to be really monstrously stupid to not be able to get into one of them), and will be glad to train you as long as you have that magical piece of paper that proves you're not retarded.

The problem is that when you get out of school you find out it was all a lie: the businesses that you'll be applying to not only want a very specific degree, but experience as well because they absolutely DO NOT want to train you because, as far as they are concerned, that's what schools are for. So what you really needed from school was not only to correctly predict which degree would be in demand in four years, but also to land some kind of internship. Alternatively, you can cross your fingers and go into way more debt getting a masters.

There's something that I've been wondering about american education for a while: do you have high schools that specialise you for a certain profession? In my country high schools (or at least our equivalents of them) can be either general ones that are harder and make you a jack of all trades, but are necessary for certain universities and give you more options or ones that specialise you in a certain profession like carpentry for example. They're not on the same level as universities but you still have an easier time getting a job in some fields if you go to one of them even if you don't have a degree.

Sadly, for the most part, no. There are a few vocational high schools in some places, but they are rare. Educational tracking tends to be criticized as "elitist" and "undemocratic." Trade unions used to provide training in a number of fields, but aside from electricians, plumbers, railroad engineers, etc. (who still have training programs because they are subject to licensing), most of the trades are dominated by non-union (and frequently unskilled) labor now and you'd be better off working retail.
