Season 5, because that's when they ran out of book. The showrunners/writers have never been that great, the strength of GRRM's material carried them a long way, but when they had to start writing their own plotlines, they revealed they have no idea what makes a compelling storyline or a compelling character.

It's funny, because you can see the lingering "GRRM moments" post season 5, shit he had planned in his head but hadn't gotten to yet (Circe's march of shame, Hodor, Burning Girl, The blowing up of Balor's sept.) And they're all far and away the best and most engaging highlights of season 5, 6, and 7

A character usurping power from another character happens 5 fucking times in season 6. There is little to no build up, and they one's responsible have zero fucking consequences. Everyone just let's them do what they want and never question anything. It drove me fucking insane that no one seemed to care about the writing in season 6 tanking.

regarding your pic, I loved the actor (and the character in general) of the Great Jon, but iirc he stopped appearing on the show because the actor got into a fist fight in a bar and ended up in legal trouble and got cut, still could have recasted him like they did with the Mountain, Daario and Beric. And yeah, it felt so lazy of the show to just throw the Umbers into the "Bad guy" role for no reason, and even on top of that during the Battle of the Bastards it's mentioned that House Hornwood committed the most troops of any single house and you see a bunch of their men being slaughtered and crawling around in the pile of bodies but Lord Hornwood isn't even shown or mentioned once.

That's not really defying tropes, though. It's fairly common for villain factions to have a "black sheep" that undergoes redemption or some shit (which is what Tyrion sorta went through and Jaime is on his way to go through) and either sacrifices themselves for the good guys or becomes a kind of anti-hero protagonist to add some flavor to the story. Same with heroes sometimes having a "bad ancestor" that did something horrible, yada, yada, yada, but the heroes are going to make wrongs right again and so on.

So yeah, Gurm is playing with fairly conventional tropes here but he manages to cloak it in enough grimdark bullshittery that nobody notices.

i'd say most of the bad things starks have done were justified, except for stoneheart who I hardly count.

Call me reddit but I feel like daenery's arc is a core aspect of the show, not so much for her story, but because we get to explore the rest of the world that isn't westeros, which makes for a huge part of the world. Even tiny snippets like seeing a red priestess from yi ti gives the world a lot more depth.
