I liked it until I realized it was racemixing propaganda with an air of plausible deniability.
Then Guillermo opened up his fat fucking mouth at the Oscars and on twitter and removed all doubt that it was indeed racemixing and refugee propaganda. I guess he needed to do that to win an (((Academy Award))) which is sad considering Pan's Labyrinth was a much better film and didn't need hamfisted political metaphors to be captivating (his twitter revisionism aside)

yeah at first I thought it was The Christ story updated for modern times, which was a neat idea but then Guillermo gave that gay speech at the Oscars and it really tarnished the movie for me

This is a weird one to mention, but I thought the movie had unusually good pacing.
Pacing is something that I find has been subjected to a load of gimmicky trends in big budget productions over the last decade.

It's one of the movies where I watched this and when I was sitting in cinema after the movie 'Now wait a fucking second' and then it just went to shit for me - characters were atrocious, not badly played, but everyone was a piece of shit, design was fine until you think that military installation is rusted to shit, there was almost no bonding, she just went and fucked a fish, for some reason there was french music in Americlap flick, and waiting for the right weather made fuck all sense. Easily 3/10.
Oh and the scene where she rubbed her duck? Yeah, give there a scene of a guy that whips out his dick and rubs it off, that certainly enriches the character somehow
