Eh a 9mm would do fine, they go through a heavy sallet helmet easy enough. A .45 might be good though if being charged by an armored horseman, but the 1911 barely holds enough bullets to kill one horse.

I actually really like ASOIAF but George's conception of time and distance is DABID tier. For example, there is no fucking way Westeros is the size of the Americas judging by how Catelyn teleports around during the War of the Five Kings.
Additionally, on the time side of things, there is no fucking way the Starks could have a continuous bloodline ruling in Winterfell for 10 gorillion years.
