The characters are all fleshed out fine and the high notes are hit fine too. I will grant you, and this is the only thing I grant you, that I didn't like the ending, well, part of it, anyway. I didn't like Hugo's ascension up the cable, he wasn't crazed and zombie-like as he should've been, and it all felt a bit rushed, especially considering the scene earlier where he was beheaded. Everything else in the movie was good to amazing.

acknowledging the existence of the uncanny valley and the fact realistic CGI face isn't possible yet is not some genius move, its what you do to keep from hopping into the uncanny valley. If you can't achieve absolute realism then you simply don't try, and you make the character less realistic if it needs to be anything other than horrifying.

a couple of friends i went viewing the movie with (each a different time), told me that that they were worried about the eyes because of the trailer, but pointed out that from the first instant when she awakes she looked incredible and cute.
i also saw that experience posted a lot here, so in the end the cgi face worked.

They're might be some kind of intent to this, I reread Last Order, last weekend and: there's a weird kind of blood lust that a bunch of the men of Zalem/Tiphares exhibit once they're allowed to rebel against their understandings that seems almost hyperbolic ro characterized. By the time I finished Last Order I realized that there is so much fucked up psycho politics going into everyone's motivations going far out into space that I have no idea who's really controlling anything anymore. That being said, I don't know if the bloodlust is supposed to be allegory, or by design, by Melchidesek perhaps, in order to achieve a certain equilibrium.

It wasn't the special effects, though they knocked my socks off.
It wasn't the fight scenes, though they were an adrenaline rush.
It wasn't the feels even though they were heart stopping at times.
Even Alita wasn't he primary reason (though she probably is if you hear out my last point).
