I think it would've actually bombed due to higher marketing. Regardless of how much marketing you do, the audience would still think the concept isn't exactly worth devoting attention to and the look of the main character would still turn some heads. As much as I liked Alita I think the script is kinda messy and there are pacing issues towards the end is what hurt it more than anything, critics by in large ignored all the good and focused heavily on those issues since they're easy to notice and easy to write about and bouncing between 60% and 59% for it's opening week certainly hurt it's box office potential. Second big thing were the eyes, every normie I encountered when I asked them about the movie they either A. never heard of it and then immediately checked the RT and said something along the lines of "it's only a 59%-60%" egh, is it really good? or B. Have heard of it and said "those eyes are weird, pass". So maybe they should have shown that first trailer to Jim so he could fix the eyes before showing it to the world.

I think that script could have used a few more revisions, if it had a few more high moments like "FUCK YOUR MERCY" I also think it would have resonated more. Hugo's back to back deaths was another issue, it's straight from the source material but the source material builds it up better and it actually works there, here it comes off as kinda weak he's dead one second, now he's back only to immediately die again, almost laughable as seen in the movie, the whole romance sub-plot could have been handled better.

What I'm really saying is if we locked Rodriguez in a groundhog's day type situation where he has to keep remaking the movie from the start until the critical and audience RT comes out over 80% it probably wouldn't have taken him more than three or four loops to do it. If this was an 80%+critlca/80%+audience movie it would have made more than 500m easily.

Audiences don't care about Rottentomatoes anymore, honestly. Look at how many films make billions of dollars with scores sub 50%. Audience perception just wasn't great pre-release because of the character design, it being another live action manga adaptation, and the severe lack of marketing. The audience score at 94% though is telling what most audiences think. The viewership and fanbase that spawned out of just word of mouth is pretty incredible and very unexpected like this. Fox just had to dump the movie into a timeslot so they could hope to make the most money back. Even the art book gets the movie's release date wrong because they moved it last minute. The fact it's going to cross 420 million or more is already quite surprising, more than other similar blockbusters with even bigger name talent.

I knew going in that I'd love the movie even more, but I have to say I wasn't expecting to get quite as emotional as I did... The heart this movie has is just unreal, and it brings out feelings in me that I haven't properly processed for quite some time, and I'm grateful for it!
Also, turns out the bar next to the theater serves a homemade wheatbeer spiced with oranges, so I'm now sipping that and reflecting on how I feel about things...
