Also, I think a large part of it was that she had just hit the big time with Juno, where she plays a presumably heterosexual girl who becomes pregnant. Much of the audience found her cute and fell in love with her. To find out that she is a lesbian and would never do any of those things - in other words, she's an actress who is just acting out a part, and if you felt for her you've been emotionally manipulated like the sucker you are - was too much for most audiences. It felt like losing your first love; and realizing that she was never really that into you in the first place.
