Went to go see it because I've been seeing these threads.
>Overall I enjoyed it very much, but it felt like two movies crammed into one. There was some seriously sappy teen romance that belonged in a kids movie, but also a fair bit of decapitation. Also the hardy-boys URM ship segment, and the cringey motor-ball in the town square were hard to watch. I wish they'd just given it an R rating and gone ahead with some gore. Some of the cyber-punk visuals and character designs were absolutely stunning though.

My initial take as the credits were rolling was a 5/10, but I soon after adjusted it to a 5.5 because I certainly liked the film, I just think it strayed tonally at times. That said, the more I lurk here and the more ^w^ faces I see, the more I want to give it a 6.

Whether Nova really exists or not (in movie cannon) would have been a cool plot point for a second instalent. The rest of the movie was pretty cool though

It's got a very generic score of 6.5-7.0 on just about every movie site I checked, including foreign ones, where they don't care about american culture war and controversies. The A cinemascore is pure bullshit because they polled bunch of marveldrones and basedboys on its opening day. My only gripe is that he looks too beefy and not scrawny enough. He's a genuinely cool dude and very nice and kind and sweet towards Alita, but it's harder to empathize with him because he's essentially a Chad (in physique, if not in personality) that everyone'a dream girl falls for.
But, he's really fine enough and does his job as the love interest. He even looks a lot like the original Hugo from the manga in the face.

I think those that have issue with Hugo are underage and/or mentally stunted persons. They do not understand enough about movies/story telling to know that main characters aren't always perfect. Quite the contrary many main characters aren't likeable all through the history of story telling. Many are flawed individuals. It is these flaws that create the storyline as is the case with Hugo.
There are some who will complain about Keean's performance as well. I am not sure what they expect of such a young actor. Very few young actors are ever that great as it takes time for a person to develop great acting skills. This is why so many high school movies star actors in the 20s to 30s.
It should be noted too that Keean's performance needed to be subdued. The movie is about Alita, not Hugo. A human actor could easily upstage an animated one. Keean being reserved in his performance helped Alita's animated performance shine.

Yeah, it should've been more like the manga/anime where Hugo goes mad and his body/brain can't handle being mostly mechanic, and by the time he walks up the cable he's more crazy and in a trance, almost like a zombie, going through the motions. In the movie he just comes off as suicidal at best and an idiot at worst.
Not to mention the less than stellar CGI for his new body. I was getting Spy Kids: 3D vibes.
That scene, for me, was the worst part of the movie. If I could change one thing, it would be that scene.

He wasn't driven enough, in the manga all he thought about was Zalem and it wasn't until his death that he realized he actually cared for Alita they tried to make him more sympathetic by making him actually care about Alita early on, but I think it backfired and made him not only less interesting but also less sympathetic as well because rather than being committed to his goals he seems aimless, if he's single minded and doing everything he can to stay on the right side of the law while making enough chips to get to Zalem even if it's all a lie and he never can actually get to Zalem it gives his character a purpose and it's admirable to watch him pursue it. When you cast him as this well meaning boyfriend type who will sacrifice his dream as to not upset Alita and make him the initiator of the kiss and generally just make him not single minded it just makes him boring.

His story is complex, being a love interest but also a minor criminal. Imagine if he's a 2 dimensional perfect chad. No one would buy it.
