He's probably honouring his father in a sense considering Tolkien also would have been raging and a grump over the adaptions. I recall his own words expressing moody sentiment over an adaption attempt when he was still alive changing a relatively minor thing. I can't picture him being that happy over the films. He'd probably be pissy over the lands surrounding Minas Tirith being dry and barren rather than lush and green, let alone big plot changes.
