Reality tv is substantially cheaper to produce than regular programming.
They're also hemmorhaging cable viewers and are afraid to risk putting money into more costly educational productions when their average viewer just wants to be entertained.

I remember liking Mythbusters, How it's made and Wild Discovery and that one Dinosaur documentary (Planet Dinosaur/Dinosaur Planet I think).

First seasons of Mythbusters was based but their editing became horrible as the seasons went by. I remember the cut-recap versions back then being only ~20mins.

That's 'Animal Face Off'. The show is from 15 years ago user. I was still a kid when first watching it, and I still remember very disappointed with how lion manages to beat tiger and anaconda beating a jaguar. The CGI was bad then, and even worse by our modern standard. They also have silly 'obviously who is going to win' fight like Hippo vs bull shark or elephant vs rhino lmao.
