My fav drink is black coffee, not coke.
Wong Kar-wai are among the biggest hacks out there
Influential film critic Roger Ebert gave the film 3 Stars (out of 4 stars), but was measured in his praise:
>This is the kind of movie you'll relate to if you love film itself, rather than its surface aspects such as story and stars. It's not a movie for casual audiences, and it may not reveal all its secrets the first time through . . . If you are attentive to the style, if you think about what Wong is doing, Chungking Express works. If you're trying to follow the plot, you may feel frustrated ... When Godard was hot, in the 1960s and early 1970s, there was an audience for this style, but in those days, there were still film societies and repertory theaters to build and nourish such audiences. Many of today's younger filmgoers, fed only by the narrow selections at video stores, are not as curious or knowledgeable and may simply be puzzled by Chungking Express instead of challenged. It needs to be said, in any event, that a film like this is largely a cerebral experience: You enjoy it because of what you know about film, not because of what it knows about life.
Gabriel-John-Strange:
>Flawless tale of brief encounters and abstract moments. Far superior than most of Hong Kong's bullet ridden action fests, Chungking Express takes you on an emotional journey of love, loss, and chance excursions. Cinematography and editing is groundbreaking as this drama unfolds soap-opera-like stories without all the overacting and melodrama. Wong Kar-Wei has sealed his place in cinematic history with this tour de force.
bump
when did Chungking Express formerly Sneedking Feedpress become simpsons-material?
spent his whole career trying to recreate the spontaneity of chungking express.
Seems like a guy who likes books more than movies but just happened to get popular as a director. All the narration and plot devices remind me of murakami novels, they seem like similar guys on the loneliness zeitgeist.
tell me more
I recognize Coca Cola, Sprite and Pringles, but it seems to me that the rest are just chinese brands which makes the product placement fine. It's not like coke is the top seller in china either, iirc it and pepsi aren't even top 3 colas in that country.
SNEED
I don't know, do you like pineapple?
>spent his whole career trying to recreate the spontaneity of chungking express.
Nah, 2046 and Grandmaster were super deliberate, that's why they took forever to film and edit.
>All the narration and plot devices remind me of murakami novels, they seem like similar guys on the loneliness zeitgeist.
This is true though
Its hard to find torrents for this movie with good seeds. Is this movie worth buying? I don't like to watch trailers
Did you like Lost in Translation? Amelie?
I think I misspoke, sorry english is not my first language. I meant that because of chungking express' success, i think he felt pressured to make something with the same energy but didn't trust the spontaneous method used to make the film. So all his films afterwards feel less emotional and more controlled, at least to me.
Ok, that is fair. Yeah, part of CE's magic is how lightning in a bottle it is, and how its verve comes through in the movie. Generally less emotional post-CE, yes, but Zhang Zi Yi was amazing in 2046
This movie cured my depression. Perhaps the only thing that's allowed me to continue living in a big city without killing myself.
Based
First half or second half?
Both and the interplay between them, I guess. My least favorite part is the segment with the girl in his apartment, but them in the restaurant is great.
Never watched Amelia. Watched a bit of lost in translation, I liked the half I watched.
The apartment is a bit too tryhard-y, but I still love it
It sounds like you might like it. For better or worse it's one of the most iconic HK films ever so having an opinion on it has a bit of cachet.

ALL THE LEAVES ARE BROOOOOWN
No, you thought it was needlessly dull, the song they kept playing was annoying and ultimately Fallen Angels was better.
You'll even go as far to say Chungking Express is Rebels of the Neon God for brainlets.
nice dubs

Ebert was addressing an issue there that's only gotten worse ever since. I think these days something like 2001, Godfather or even the original Star Wars could never be succesful because there's no audience to promote it. Pretty sure the only massively succesful movie of the last few years that wasn't a brainless action movie was Bohemian Rhapsody, a biopic about a popular band.
And I like brainless action movies just fine but it's a testament to the mediums stagnation that there are people now who consider fucking Alita a change of pace.
First half always
nah, there's been plenty of films that has been semi-successful:
