Well, first and foremost: It was satisfying as fuck. From the first fight when she was protecting Ido, I was in my seat with absolute glee watching her kick absolute ass. Alita herself was endearing as all hell, and really grew on me. One thing I loved is that every fight had a purpose to it, even the most meaningless one, which I'd saw was the bar fight. Even then it established something, as well as being a fun scene. All the battles were, every one just unique and fun to watch. You rooted for her the whole way through. Storywise, it took me a bit to get used to the pacing at the beginning. It was weird to be just dropped into this world I know nothing about along with a clueless protagonist, but I got used to it. I loved how the story kept adding more and more, but it all felt well paced, and felt like a good amount of time was spent on each part without it ever feeling like it dragged or went on for too long. Now knowing that it was based off of a manga makes a lot of sense. I really liked how things didn't happen because of Alita appearing, but because Alita took the initiative herself to get the ball rolling. It was all dependent on Alita's character, not on just the fact that she's the new guy on the block. The story was fun to watch unravel, and there are probably some things I missed that I'll catch after rewatching, but it was all comprehensive and moved smoothly. I didn't expect to get so emotionally invested, especially around the end. I genuinely felt attached to what was happening. There's only a few real issues that come to mind. There were two scenes where the way the camera cut felt jarring, other than that, editing job was great. The time to process Hugo's death was too short, especially considering the movie was right near it's end, but the way they transitioned it to the ending scene was pretty great, so I forgive it. Plus the fact that you get that time after you watched the movie. (cont)

The biggest criticism I can give is that it ended too soon, and I really mean that as a criticism and not in a "oh, it was so good I want more". I understand why that's the case of course, but it really just felt like all this momentum that remained was properly sent off. It's like saving your spell points, you get more and more, and there's time you use them to get a payoff, but you still have some left over that you didn't use. Not a great analogy, but the best way I could explain it. I think the best way to view Alita would be like how you watch a musical, the first movie is the first act, then you get a thirty minute or so break after that ends, and the second act (second movie) starts off, and you continue from where you left off.
Overall, I loved it, it was visually fun, had satisfying fights, and a story that you can get attached to. It's like Hardcore Henry, but more polished and with more of a focus on the story and there I say, better fights? I'm excited to watch it again for a second time, and I'm really, really glad I got to watch it in the first place. God bless this movie, and bless the chocolate eating scene because I just fucking love chocolate and that sound it made every time she bit into it.

I mainly compare because of how satisfying the fights were in both films. I stand by the fact that Hardcore Henry has one of the most satisfying movie finales of all time, but Alita had a lot more to it that was satisfying overall. As a fan of the manga i think they could have left out the mars flashbacks, Nova and most of the motorball stuff.
Ending with Hugo's ashes on a baloon flying to Zalem and finally Ido going into a motorball match and seeing Alita. Basically stick even more to the structure of the manga. But it would have been a different movie.

I think I care so much about sequels because of all the possibilities there are. Finally a return to true blockbuster cinema, the neo-noir science fiction days (I mean they even had Jennifer Connolly and she was in Dark City) and even the gritty spaghetti westerns. You've already got Robert Rodriguez for Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Sin City, and then Jim for his realistic science fiction takes (and awesome tech-noir Terminator shit), it's a fucking match in heaven for me, like the perfect combination. I want to see them go all out on it and do the genres justice. It's been far too long.

I have no idea but I watched the movie four times and the emotional scenes like Hugo's death and alitas utter pain just kept hitting harder for me. There's one part in particular where she's just whispering don't die over and over again. Her delivery is just so goddamn authentic that it never failed to get me water eyed. i knew about james cameron wanting to do the movie before avatar was made.
i was giving up when he announced he was going to make avatar 2.
