I still remember those old Netflix commercials where they send movies to your mailbox

And I remember thinking it was so fucking stupid and no one's ever going to wait for weeks or even days on movies to come in a fucking package and go through the hassle of returning it when they can just drive to the nearest Blockbuster.

But egg on my face, they actually did it. They actually got people to wait on movies in the fucking mail and went on to create a goddamn media empire.

well said, thanks for sharing

blockbuster didn't even have a subscription when netflix came out. that was the biggest difference

good thread

They still do the DVDs in the mail thing. It's nice because that way you can actually see most movies. It's especially great if you like classics, which are basically nonexistent on the streaming service.

>They actually got people to wait on movies in the fucking mail and went on to create a goddamn media empire.
The 'you' now makes it sound like it should be applauded. It was a damned scam then and it's grown even bigger now. Your younger self was right to think it was stupid. Once again the idiotic masses have created another media empire than their minds are subject too.

I still don't know how they made it work. I remember thinking they'd lose money because people would be too lazy to send that shit back.

That was how I watched the Sopranos. The wife and I would get two Sopranos dvds in the mail every Friday. We'd make spaghetti or pizza to help the mood

Attached: IMG_1338.jpg (1170x658, 62K)

my dad used to rent films, copy them onto a new disk and send them back

really makes you think huh?

I still do the DVD in the mail thing. It's the only way to find some movies easily.

>he didn't have Netflix right when it started
You could get all sorts of wild shit you couldn't get at Blockbuster or purchase for a reasonable amount of money, you'd have to pirate it. What we used to do was get stuff and rip it. I wanna say it was quite easy to get a bundle of big anime titties in your mailbox on the regular through netflix.

I still have movies in those envelopes that I never returned. It seems like when they switched to streaming they just forget about them.

Same way redbox still works, they hit you with a huge fee since they have your card info.

Goyim are animal in human skin. They exist only to serve us.

I think I have God of War 3 sitting around somewhere. I wanted to keep it so I just told them it wasn’t in the envelope.

Amazon Prison was some prime Netflix kino back in the day

it didn't work that well? the only reason netflix became what they are is because they embraced streaming the fastest while blockbuster was too stuck in its ways to move on from brick and mortar.

Heh-heh, you hear that T? No late fees!

That's nice autistic zoomer user

>weeks
where the fuck do you live?

>wait
before streaming, most people were on the 3 discs at a time plan and just cycled.

>blockbuster
why go all the way to blockbuster to not get what you want or have to search the shelves and then wait in line because they only have one checkout employee and then be on a timer where you have to watch and return it in 2-3 days instead of just choose what you want from an easily searchable database, get shit at your door, watch it whenever, send it back whenever? it was INSTANTLY more convenient

>hassle of returning

like i just said, way easier to go to the mailbox whenever than be timed to go to blockbuster

i’ve read some stupid shit in the internet, but you might have been one of the dumbest people ever if it took you years to think netflix would catch on,

this shit could make a comeback with 8k hdr media and the joke that is american internet infrastruc

no late fees was a big reason behind the success as well
blockbuster made most of its money on late fees

Yeah and it was great because they had some rare as fuck DVDs.

Then people realized the DVDs were rare and never returned them.

i remember I rented Ghost in the Shell dvd and kept it for like 6 months

If you rent a lot of movies it’s a good option.
Just rip the Blu-Rays that come in the mail and watch them later whenever you want, at least it’s a bit more legal than illegal downloads.
If you rent movies occasionally just use a Redbox.

I'm no nostalgiafag, I remember how much blockbuster sucked ass.

Never underestimate how lazy people are. I mean you'll pay like 5 bucks extra to have a 10 dollar pizza delivered so you don't have to pick it up yourself.

Blue ray dvd already kicks the shit out of any compression available

Your dad is a thief

It kind of worked because you had a queue and could receive and return as fast as you watched, so it always meant more fresh films coming in. I think the typical plan was 3 rentals at a time.

It's still better than their shitty streaming selection.

As a USPS employee I'm glad this never took off, less shit to deliver every day. Now if only somehow brick and mortar stores could resurge and kill online shopping my routes could be finished before the sun goes down.

Don’t worry autonomous delivery robot will take your job.

There's no way. Typically you can get stuff online for cheaper and not have to deal with any sales people or customers. Also less gas wasted, less time, etc.

Anyone who believes this has no insight on being a courier driver. Half the roads aren't paved or even flat. And that specific robot can maybe carry about a streets worth of mail.

Plus any nigger can just steal it.

There's no way the urban youth wouldn't destroy these things in a second flat. You literally can't even have CAGED vending machines in ghettos without them being broken up. I see these as tools for super rich gated communities, maybe.

i upload them into a harddrive

My neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks wtf Amazon

That’s just for smaller stuff, there will be other ways of delivering autonomously.

Netflix disc was awesome. I marathoned so many shows like 24 and the wire through netflix. The delivery times were fast too cause I live in LA.

fuck you.

Have sex

He sent the movie back, idiot!

They still do it. My father does not use internet frequently. He uses the mailbox Netflix service and has been for almost ten years now.
When you live in shitty country side, don't have cable and don't care about internet, it's pretty good, actually.

thanks for showing us stuff that are unobtainable because of NIGGERS

Seriously. Even if there's nothing to steal, what's to stop a gang of neegs from just fucking a robot up or tossing it into a lake? They will vandalize and destroy simply because they can.

>And I remember thinking it was so fucking stupid and no one's ever going to wait for weeks or even days
It's supposed to be "for days or even weeks". Also, it was 3 days. I used to get 3 at a time, rip them, and send them back. 3 day turn around. Not bad for the 2000s.

>hassle
>walking to your mailbox

How fat are you?

I hate people that just stand there watching as much as the thug nigger. Doing nothing is just another way of saying it's okay.

>bash robot with stick
>bunch of free shit
>no assault/murder charge

Apparently their mail service is the only part of Netflix that is still profitable, so they will probably continue doing it until there’s absolutely no market for it anymore.

everyone always tells me im the only one who still does the dvds by the mail. i dont know how people like Netflix for their streaming more than for the dvds. their streaming selection is 95% dogshit and the original content mostly sucks. Their dvds by the mail aint what it used to be either but still pretty damn good way to see a lot of shit from the 70s/80s/90s thats normally kinda hard to find on streaming.

I had them delivered at work. Mailroom would put them in my in-box, and the mail dude would mail them back. Worked great. I used the fuck out of the service, I'd order everything and dupe the disks (free blanks from work, too). I just wish more of it had been HD and widescreen.

its still stupid. but all those idiots paying for netflix is what allows me to pirate stream it for free day of release. so good on them.

good job idiot. u couldve invested like 10k back then and had 100k today

>amazon prison

what was that?
