Is Mahjong different than online Mahjong?
Online Mahjong is just picking matching tiles but when I see the game actually being played it looks like a competitive game with betting.

It is a competitive game with betting, it's pretty much Yakuza's official sport.

When I last went to China I saw 5 minutes of a gangster movie where the gang boss was punishing a guy by making him eat mahjong tiles.

Also is a anime, But Akagi.

Also 41:05. A kid once took a picture of me without my permission, but I didn't do anything about it because I remembered how retarded and petty the NPCs in this video looked.

Akagi

The object of Mah-jongg is to be the first to complete a hand of 14 tiles, consisting of 4 sets of 3 tiles (either 3 matching or 3 in a row of the same suit) plus 1 pair.

Players normally have a hand of 13 tiles, and on their turn they draw a new tile from the wall and if they don't have MahJongg, then they discard one tile to the center. A freshly discarded tile can be picked up by another player, but only if it completes a set of 3 or a run of 3 (and there is priority over who can pick up the tile). Mah-jongg therefore comes either from a newly picked up tile from the wall or from the center.

There is a complex points system, dictated by the seating position as well as the variety (and lack thereof) of the suits in one's hand (three suits exist: Bamboo, Crack, and Plate/Circle). Furthermore, there are bonus tiles (the 4 winds, flowers, and dragons) which also affect your final points.

It is a very enjoyable game, and open to extreme customization depending on whom you play it with. A set can be as cheap as 10$ (plastic tiles) or you could go for something more impressive (bone+bamboo backing will be around 100$, and antiques run into the thousands).

Finally, when the game is over, the tiles are placed face down onto the table and everyone mixes them up. The sound of the tiles being mixed is one that many adults remember hearing as children, before they learned to play. Myself included.

>learned mahjong watching Akagi and playing Yakuza
>can never get better because I don't know a single other soul who plays it
who /mahjong/ here? Are there people/ places you can play in America?

Chinese mahjong rules is garbage.
Riichi (nip) mahjong is genuinely competitive and deserves recognition among the pokerpleb/bleckjeck set.

Out for a Kill with Steven Seagal

Just play on tenhou.

I play it with family or friends. If you don't know anyone who plays it, then get together a group of four (like a poker round), get some beer, and learn how to play. Sometimes you just have to learn the game and get started. It's like gin rummy (I think, haven't played in a long time), and once you get used to recognizing the symbols on the tiles, then it's a breeze. I've taught non-asians how to play, and they love it after a while.

I agree it deserves more recognition, but that's how it goes in the west. It could get a serious boost if it appeared in a Bond movie, for instance...but as Mah-jongg is somewhat more social than something like poker, the 'seriousness' of it on film disappears. Mah-jongg is very similar visually to dominoes, and in many cases the same actions appear (i.e. someone slamming a tile onto the table, everyone mixing the tiles together after, bantering with your friends, etc). Poker is in many respects the opposite: it's very quiet, you don't want to give away anything, you can't really slam a card down in frustration, etc...and cards are somewhat silent whereas tiles are very loud and noisy.

absolutely kino

In Crazy Rich Asians they play it like it's poker.

Here is an actual mahjong online game. Single player only against bots but it teaches you the basics and special hands.

. ITT...Plebs. There is ascenein Wong Kar Wai’s lyrical masterpieceIn the Mood for Lovethat illustrates the never ending mahjong game perfectly. The two would-be lovers, played by Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, are pent up in his bedroom for twenty-four hours while they wait for the neighbors to finish playing mahjong–she cannot sneak back into her room, unnoticed, until they leave, lest the neighbors suspect an illicit affair..

Joy Luck Club if you're a woman.
God of Gamblers if you're a man.

I forgot how much this game fucks with you.

>have useless 7 pin
>discard it
>draw another one
>discard it
>draw another one
>discard it
>draw a 6 pin
>discard it
>draw an 8 pin
>close the game

I swear it does it on purpose.

The best is when the asshole across from you lays down a kong halfway through the game when you were waiting for just one, JUST ONE of those to finish off a run of 3.

>it is cruel. very very cruel.

There is an Akagi live action drama series.

The opening scene from Donnie Yen's "Special ID" movie starts with a mahjong game that turns into a tasty fight.

There are also 2 Kaiji movies where are pretty good.
