Fug, as I was napping, I had a totally lucid moment as I thought about Hugo's death by falling.
Just imagine the sheer terror of falling from the sky as a limbless torso. You have arms to shield your face as you'd instinctively want to or curl your legs either. You're just falling with no arms and no legs and there's nothing you can do about it at all to comfort yourself in your moments before death.
That was just a horrifying thought, scared the shit out of me.

People watching only the movie probably got the impression that the reason Alita can beat up cyborgs so easily is because of her antimatter heart-reactor or the general OPness of the Berserker body (which didn't even have all its features shown), when the actual main reason is PK. You could give her a body made out of plastic and cardboard that runs on a Duracell and she'd still beat vanilla cyborgs thanks to PK.
She could have at least done one Hertzer Hauen just to show. Maybe they were embarrassed to say the fake german words. Oh well, maybe in the sequel.

This has popped up elsewhere and I think it's a valid criticism of the movie. Movie's version of Scrapyard is just too pretty and comfy. It doesn't seem any worse a place to live than modern day Mexico or any random third-world country. I can't think of an actual reason to do it like that either, because they built a giant set for it, and thus should have full control over how it looks. Ido's clinic/apartment looks down right luxurious. Only clearly bad thing seen in the place are random killers roaming the streets at night, which while an obvious mark against the neighbourhood don't seem to do much if you stay indoors after dark. In the manga it was clear why Hugo wanted to leave: the place was a total shithole.
It's a legit gripe. Not one that kills the movie for me or anything, but a point against it on the scoreboard.

It's like a deeper metaphor for the driving emptiness that Alita feels. She has a placeholder in her heart that she needs to express (through music or fighting) but she's unsure of what to put in there. Should it be love? Should it be merciless fighting? In the end she wavers, like a pendulum swinging from one position to the next, and frequently fails to correct it and the wrong sentiment falls out.

Just got back from seeing this. Never read the manga, never saw the anime. My wife and I really enjoyed it. The only part she didn't like was that the love interest died, and I was a little annoyed it ended with her going back to the games, but I guess that was written into the comic and justified a bit better there.
The pacing was great (I read a couple of reviews that had issues with it, but personally enjoyed it), and the acting was fantastic. The characters were all enjoyable, and there wasn't anybody I felt like didn't have enough screen time. Refreshing after all these Marvel shits.

See, that's the kicker: You're thinking of human martial arts. Panzerkunst isn't a human martial art at all. It's a martial art designed specifically for cyborgs, to use against other cyborgs, and every single technique in it is literally impossible for a human body to perform.* Hertzer Hauen for example is a ultra-high-frequency vibration punch that destroys the brain through armor without piercing it.
It's one of my favorite ideas in the original manga: a martial art that just completely abandons all concepts of human body mechanics (which every other martial art is based on) and focuses on INhuman body mechanics. That's such a cool concept.

I was left feeling like literally everybody except Alita needed one more scene to flesh them out. Give me one brief scene with Hugo's backstory, one brief scene where Vector gets to show his background or goals or anything at all, one scene with Fake Makaku's backstory etc. Everybody needed one more scene. All the actors were great, but they were given so little to do. Wouldn't even have added much to the film's length, just ten minutes, maybe fifteen.

There is one part in the movie that makes no sense to me at all: WHY does Vector show Chiren's body parts to Alita? Just to taunt her? He has to know that would only make her extra mad. Why would a Vector, who's depicted as a rational fellow, taunt a killer cyborg that's already itching to cut his melon off? You're focusing on one part of the city that looks okay, probably the part with highest natural human congregation, while ignoring all the gloomy, cyberpunk and industrial looking parts of the city in the movie. Besides, all you so called manga purists either have alzheimers or you're not remembering the manga right. You should reread it again and see that much of the movie mirrors manga almost 1:1. The "Scrapyard" wasn't as much of a inhospitable shithole as you think, you just remember it that way because Kishiro mostly avoided showing the city itself. It was usually some dark alleyway, corner, basement or bird's-eye view of the city where it looks industrial and gloomy, but there are a few panels where we get a view of a normal street, and didn't look all that different from the movie. Ladies, ladies, there's no need to fight. The full original name is Scrap Iron City and both the manga translation and the movie shortened it, just in different ways. Manga left out the "iron city" part and turned it into Scrapyard, movie left out the "scrap" part and turned it into Iron City. Both are equally wrong, or right.
