Despite it being about one of man's greatest accomplishments, it focused on white people too much. It was pushed out of the running because a fictitious African superhero was more realistic as a commentary about today.

It wasn't good enough for the Academy, which as it turns out doesn't mean a whole lot anymore. It may be worth debating if it ever meant something.
On a semi-related note, I say we give Spielberg his wish. Let VOD-produced films be exempt from nominations.

Granted neither were the other best picture nominees aside from The Favorite, but still.

normies are bored by movies about the real space program with the exception of fantasy movies like "hidden figures". Everybody knows the astronauts didn't die and there is very little new that can be said about the 60s space program.
