For me it's easily the best Hannibal lecter adaptation, at least regarding his character. Mikkelsen's portrayal shows the character as a pure monster, even toward the characters he's supposed to care about like Will.

He's truly terrifying in the show, in contrary of Hopkins's portrayal that was just cliche and cringy sometimes. Hannibal Tv was subtle and complex.

the pacing of season 3 was much much slower, same pretentious dialogue but without the tension and substance of previous seasons and the plot points were a lot less intricate and twisty, the storyline was much more predictable with basic rehashing of the same material from previous movies. i like to pretend season 3 didn't happen.

Season three isn't as bad as people make it out to be, the Mason Verger stuff is absolute kino, episodes 2 and 3 are shockingly bad. People can't remember every individual episode so the shittiness of episodes 2 and 3 begin to blur and spill out of their containment zones, affecting your perception of the proceeding episodes of the first half which is filled with based Mason Verger hijinks. Also, killing off Verger so soon was a mistake, fuck the books, he should've been saved as the final boss. The Red Dragon shit is dragged out for too many episodes too. Basically they needed more content. Episodes 2 and 3 needed to be condensed to one episode, both episodes basically have ten minutes worth of substance, if that.

Jack should've succeeded and beaten Verger's hitmen to the punchline. After extraditing Lecter back to the states you could have about three episodes as a political thriller, completely omitting the fantastic midseason finale with the massacre at Verger's farm, saving that and more Verger antics for the inevitable future seasons when they get revived on Netflix or Amazon or wherever. Hannibal's trial could span across several episodes with Hannibal as his own lawyer, giving himself the insanity defense while Verger is desperately trying to bribe people and influence the trial to give Lecter the death penalty, with a district attorney he's paying out the ass to get the job done.

Lecter obviously succeeds with his insanity defense and Verger has the district attorney tortured and killed in the worst way imaginable for failing. Verger is gone for the rest of the season, will return with a vengeance in future seasons once Lecter has escaped and the Red Dragon wont have to be dragged out and so fucking boring with the three episode court chess game between Lecter and Verger using three episodes in a far more entertaining way.
