Nah, he's right. That data isn't enough to tell you what the cause is. You've only got correlation. Saying that better looks makes people think you have a better personality has the same validity as saying that having a better personality makes people think you look more attractive. An entirely separate thing could also be the cause of both. It's hard to untangle correlation and cause, and this is also why social "science" results are nearly always a joke.
