Honestly, beyond it's gimmicky writing, which is at times pretty clever, there's really not that much to the books actual narrative. It's effectively just an overwritten Stephen King novel.

Johnny's story fucking sucked though, and the main thing that made his story actually worthwhile was how he injected his footnotes into the script of the Navidson Record
Plus with film you'd completely lose the formatting of the fucked up chapters and the entire chapter about the math behind the timing of echoes

He died of old age or something really common. The lines had nothing to do with his death and could have been anything from someone that had lived their before owning a dog to just some stupid accident.
It's pretty heavily implied that Zamano is just making everything up and there isn't really a monster following him or Johnny. It's just that Johnny is fucked up from his abuse as a kid and finding this made up story written by a mentally ill dude is the catalyst that sends him over the edge
