i got really confused about this film, why did paul dano pretend he never met william dafoe when he turns up at his house, they were speaking in the previous scene and then all of a sudden he hates him and they are enemies?

He doesn't want Daniel Dafoe to tell anyone that he sold his family's only chance at wealth for his own selfish desires so he pretends to be someone else only for Dafoe to drink his milkshake (ie kill him) in the end

he wasn't an asshole. he created jobs and opportunity where there was nothing other than superstition and drought. his son got hurt to the point where he couldn't communicate with him so he sent him to someone who could help him, since Daniel didn't think he could. he killed someone who lied about being his brother for personal gain, then he kills Eli because Eli is a bad person who preys on people's stupidity and who wanted to humiliate and defeat Daniel.
i don't understand how people can watch this film and think Daniel is the bad guy.
