Is this supposed to be a master piece? Just saw it for the first time and it's fucking meh. I dont understand the cult around it

You either like it or you don't. I find it very relatable and engaging 40+ years after release
Its okay but a bit slow at times
Masterpiece is one word, not two.
it's old and nothing interesting happens until the very end so that automatically means that everybody who has never actually seen the movie considers it kino.
Incel: the movie
It's a movie for people who live too much by themselves.
No normalfag would ever understand this film, sadly.
This was ok but vape fear is the real masterpiece
gotta grow up first
brainlet
It's quintessential male-kino, you probably wouldn't understand Discord tranny
It's good but it made me cringe too much and didn't enjoy it. Taking the qt to the porn theater was hard to watch
Delta should be signed or columns swapped
Come at me.
The mob guy at the going “AAAAA IM GONNA KILL YA IM GONNA KILL YA” really took me out of the mood desu
This but unironically
Through the film we're demonstrated that Travis Bickle is a social retard, with a possibility that his experiences in 'nam might've had something to do with it, although this is never made explicit so there's an equal chance that he's always been a mess. He can't relate to women and he eventually develops some kind of a saviour complex, wanting to save first Betsy and finally Iris from what he perceives to be the scum and the degeneracy of the city, and yet he clearly demonstrates that he is a degenerate himself, spending most of his free time in adult movie theaters.
Notice how he decorates his home through the first half of the movie; nearly all of it is based on something we've seen happen during the movie, giving no indication of his past beyond his introduction. He decks his walls with 70's equivalent of memes.
According to Scorsese, this was a deliberate effect. It's also why the camera pans away from Travis when he calls Betsy afterwards, as if to spare the audience from further second hand embarrassment.
Shit, thanks for the list. I'll be sure to watch the men ranking.

it was a different time
You completely missed so much of it, his killing spree at the end was an act of hitting Rock bottom, not because he wanted to be a saviour, which is why he tried to assassinate a presidential candidate before that. It's also why he attempted suicide just before the police arrived.
He isn't any better than any of the other people in the movie (besides the pedos) nor sincerely claims to be.
He wasn't a social retard. He was a sociopath who managed to trick the viewer to feel sympathy for him. His God's lonely man quote is aimed at the viewer too. The only reason he killed the pimps is because he couldn't reach the politician. He was itching to kill. He gave no fucks about the underage whore outside pure curiosity. He could have smashed Betsy too if he really wanted to get laid.
I think he did care about saving Iris to some degree, he definitely was genuinely bothered by how fucked up her situation was. It was one of the few times he actually seemed to feel strongly about something.
