That's basically the central action of the story. Light does some stupid things/the cops do some clever things, which puts them on his trail.
Once the cops have a lead, it's really hard to throw them off.

I watched some clips a while ago and realized how cringe it really is it doesn't hold out. Everytime there was a revelation about how light was so clever was honestly just pulled out of thin air for convenience. Japanese anine tends to do that. And it doesn't make me think the MC is badass, it just makes me realize the that it's lazy autistic writing.

That only happened because the anime removed massive chunks of the Near and Mello arc, it's nearly as long as L's arc in the manga.

Light (the killer) would have never be captured if he wasn't such a cocky bastard, but that was his biggest flaw. He was literally perfect: good looking, intelligent, charismatic, athletic, however, he knew that, and that made him arrogant.
He didn't expect another being like him to appear.
There was two instances early in the show were doing nothing would have eliminated any suspicions about him.

Yeah he would've. Light did several things that literally made him into a suspect that weren't necessary (though for the sake of having a story it was). L would've kept baiting him. I mean Misa is basically the reason L lost because she was so much of a waif she got a death god to die for her. Light was never gonna have Ryuk do that for him.

Light's only hope of beating L once L had him on the suspect list was killing L and he could only do that through the notebook but the only way he could get his name would be the Eyes which he refused to do.
