I thought the 2nd episode where he gets akira’d by his cat was unnerving and thought the series would get way more freaky. Then it turned out it really was the only tense conflict in the series.

The ending of Season 1 and the first 2 episodes of Season 2 is literally the series high point and then it goes in the trash. The young Greg episodes aren't bad either.

Basically, any episode where it focuses on Steven or the Gems is fucking mindless boring shit, and this is painfully obvious starting in Season 2 when there are literal, active threats that are planning on destroying the Earth at any second but Steven is too busy singing about peace and love, or it's another "Garnet has to explain how lesbian she is" episode.

The episode Too Many Birthdays is similar. You might like that one

You're at what is arguably the peak of the show. I will admit that Season 1 was great, and when it's good Steven Universe is easily better than anything kids would be watching right now.

It's funny, the fanbase pushed the meme that the show had a slow start and gets better over time but it's the exact opposite. The show had an extremely strong start, which is why I was shilling it so much back in 2013 ,2014 and 2015. The slow drip of a genuinely interesting plot, the unique characters, the OST, simple but well done visual style and clear passion put into it were all great. Literally all of those things fell apart.

If SU were cancelled after Jailbreak it would probably be considered a criminally underrated gem that would have gone to great places.
