Personally I feel the decline started around season 7 and then just stayed mediocre until season 17, then with the start of season 18 the characters looked visibly more acid yellow and the voice actors could no longer do the original voices, so we ended up with hoarse Marge, old lady Bart and always upset Homer.

For me the decline is a combination of things, that being:

1. The change in animation, everything became too clean and too neon yellow.
2. Characters no longer behaved like actual human beings who could surprise you, these were just robots.
3. Original Simpsons was created to mock society and the weirdness in it, new Simpsons embraces society and attempts to earn PC brownie points.

Shows just aren't supposed to go on so long. There's no reason for it to go on for thirty seasons, creatively. Simpsons is suited to the 90s, it shouldn't have gone past that decade.

Season 9 and 10 the quality was slipping, season 11 only has a few truly good episodes (unironically the sneed one was great), then 12 and 13 were mostly bad. Stopped watching after that.

Those are my favorites too. I like seasons 1 and 2 way more than most people too.

the original showrunners and writers make up an extremely tiny minority in the current team. it's natural that the show changed but it's not right. this happens with video game companies as well like blizzard developing diablo games or current WoW expansions; the original philosophies were lost on the new teams which took over these projects. It happened with the command and conquer series and EA, and there's something not quite right about battlefield series but i don't know if Dice were ever absorbed by a larger company or not.

The cracks appear slowly. Celebrity voices and how they're used is a good example. Early seasons celebs would play actual characters (even if they have the same name eg Michael Jackson)
By seasons 4 or 5 you get episodes like whacking day, where Barry White plays his real life self and dues ex machinas the day, but at least there's a storyline and humor. It's still good, but you can see the writing getting lazy
Then of course by zombie simpsons the "joke" is basically "look this famous person is one the show this week"
Season 5 was still good, but it was touching on getting bad. People didn't know how bad it'd get at the time, but in hindsight it's obvious
If the Simpsons was the third reich, season 5 is the first winter after invading Russia

Yeah that's just not a good idea, I have an aunt and uncle like that. extremely similar personality types who together just stop whatever personal growth there would have been otherwise.
also there's of course the other side, where you're impressed by someone because they have qualities that you lack, but then it turns out that the other person is pretty much the polar opposite of who you are so whatever you do seems alien to them.
