There's no way you can make an accurate adaptation of it, which is very close to the book. There's also no way you can make an adaptation of it which is even vaguely as good as the book.

But I think it is possible to make a relatively loose adaptation which is faithful to the spirit of the book. Which Is what I think is much more important for adaptations, than accurately copying the work.

I honestly think its one of those books you can only truly “get” if youre latin american or ar least know enough about the continent to get the themes, aesthetic and characters.

Gonna be hard to adapt that one and not have it turn out a confusing shitty mess.

Understanding references is a relatively shallow means of appreciating something. And I think most of the content of the work is universal.

If anything is lost, it's what's lost in translation between languages, not cultures. The poetry and prose of it in English is beautiful though.

It's too long, desu. Literally a century of events, and one of Gabriel's talents is how he can tell you what happened in months or years in a single paragraph. But there's so many characters and subplots, and many of them with enough meat to work on their own. One could make a whole movie just from the story of Pietro Crespi and he's a character that's like in 20 pages tops.

It's one of the books that has an incredible ending that redeems all the previous pages. Honestly one of the best endings I've ever read, but also like another user said is one issue is translation, the other is culture. A lot of the book is trying to capture the shifting cultural and political tides of Latin American identity. It's a nation that has constantly been taken over by foreign people and foreign ideas (like socialism) and it's about addressing the changes new things bring in. A lot of the book talks about how every new thing is both bad and good etc.

It's an interesting take on Latin American culture, but again the prose isn't too tight and the writing is a bit self indulgent, but it has a great ending.

This is the first real book I read. I was 14 and didn't really get it. I have read it yearly(or more) since, I've had that same one book since. I am now 29.
Last month I met and spent 4 days with a Spanish girl I started talking to when I was 17. I would read the book out loud while she rested her head In my lap, In between pages we would stop to make out. I gave her the book, hopefully we will see each other again.
