The first half of Spartacus' first season isn't good. The first extended episode is outright terrible frankly. Once it gets good later in the first season, it only gets better and better right until the series finale, but it still has a dodgy first season.

Those two characters were sleepers until suddenly breaking out. The decision to make Crassus a stoic was a bold one, and somehow they milked depth out of such a character actually overcomes the show literally raping Caesar's character.

Caesar was fine throughout Spartacus. Crassus was treated pretty well given his legacy is generally treated as him being seen as militarily competent but in actual history he was a decent commander who put down the slave rebellions happening after the Social Wars in Italy.
