It’s like this: saying you want to make films for a studio kinda boils down to saying you want to gamble with someone else’s money. You convince someone to give you a budget based on the quality of your pitch and that person wants a large return on their investment. That’s how the studio system has always operated only now the budgets are astronomically higher so studios want to avoid risk regarding the creative decisions in the stories that they tell. That’s trouble because as Elliott Smith said “Playing it safe is a fast track to mediocrity.” You have to recognize that novelty is part of the attraction of movies: the chance to encounter the phenomena of spectacle. And novelty, the experience of something new and exciting, is not possible when you’re stuck coloring inside the lines deigned for you by your bosses. Also, on a studio level, no one gets fired for saying “No” to a script that might land at another studio and become an indie smash hit. If an exec says “Yes” to a bad script and gives it a huge budget and the movie bombs, that could destroy your entire reputation and career so the execs are all risk averse as well
