I remember seeing it on r9k a long time ago but only sometimes, it wasn't constantly parroted like it is now. It was one of a few slang words for virgin, there was some documentary that picked up the incel term and spread it from what I recall. Maybe reddit picked it up then, I don't go there.

Normies got ahold of it through Elliot Rodgers and the van guy, and turned it into a new "angry white male" boogeyman (which is funny, considering Elliot himself was a hapa).

It didn't start showing up on /r9k/ and Yea Forums until it got media coverage, which should give you a good idea of the kind of people who try to pass it as a serious insult here. I think I only ever saw people use 'permavirgin' and 'wizard' before that.
