fun fact: the live action show came first and the animation was made after as a prequel.

And it's run is still going. It's not out of theaters yet. I'm personally betting on the totally baseless expectation that for the first week Captain Marvel will suck out all the money supply for theater goers, but as word of mouth quickly spreads, as bad movies are more likely to do than good movies, some of that money might be spewed back and towards Alita, considering they're "comparable" movies as far as intent goes.

By the time it's truly out of all theaters, which will be in another few weeks, possibly a month, it's reasonable to expect that $50M to shrink to $20 or less, hence my estimation for a $150M return.

Remember that this is a passion project of Cameron and his primary goal isn't to make bank for the sake of making bank, he wants to make his own story based off another story as a love letter to Alita. As long as he recognizes there's a big enough market with a reliable following, he's definitely giving the green light for the sequels. He's not beholden to anybody else. Flops don't matter if sequels come out anyways.

It absolutely wasn't much at all. This whole fabrication of the marketing being literally over double the production cost is becoming increasingly annoying. Sure, marketing can take up a big chunk of total product cost, but to say it's literally 100% of the production cost? I don't think that's true even for the gigantic production movies. In any case, we know that box office sales are more for publicity. Even though that's where most studios and distributors expect to make the biggest brunt of their return, like probably 65-70%, the "Product" isn't deemed a success or failure until it's entirely shelved after all merchandising, home sales and streaming revenue have been accounted for as well.

Even if Alita makes back $150 of the $170 in box office sales, they still have to factor in profit from the aforementioned three markets, which can and usually will push films that are close to breakeven over the edge. It's a safe bet that the movie will, in the long(er) run make back it's full production cost, marketing budget and perhaps a minor profit.

Currently Alita is at 120 million in China box office and actually outgrossing HTTYD3 there now. Well, according to multiple interviews and covering the behind the scenes of the last 20 years, Cameron had over 1000 documents for the first film, and 300 specifically on the sequels. Cameron had a rough outline and I guess a first draft. But Rodriguez wrote a shooting draft based on all of Cameron's notes and Cameron was so happy with it, he gave Rodriguez full directing duties.

you really have to see the film at least twice that's the problem, on first viewing I physically cringed at some of the dialogue but after second viewing it's grown on me and I love it

I'm curious to see what others didn't like about the movie; I loved it but I have only a minor gripe.

The pacing felt a little rushed at times. I think it would have helped to have a few more 'Alita explores the city' scenes in the beginning, even an extra minute would help. Just little scenes here and there to show some time pass or something would be nice, I don't really know what else I would add in (maybe another hugo and alita scene?), but another 5 - 10 minutes extra would have been good.

Occurred to me on my fourth viewing today.

I don't know if anyone really defends the CG. It's actually really jarring to switch between Christoph Waltz and Alita but I also think that CG humans just aren't there yet. This is the best they can do with tech right now.

The only saving grace is that she has stylized proportions so it doesn't look so bad when she's not acting against a real human.

I've seen the movie 4 times and while I agree with you and others that the dialogue has grown on me, there were still times on the first viewing that were pretty bad, mostly from Hugo. Specifically the "OUTSTANDING!" right at the start and his talk about staying focused on your dreams which just came across as either awkward dialogue-wise or he just didn't deliver them convincingly. Oh and obviously the bar speech, but that was intentional and once you understand her character after seeing the movie for the first time that scene is just endearing now.

I'm not sure what sort of brain-damage the critics who thought the sport was the focus of the movie were suffering from.
Or why so many of them failed to recognize the classic scene composition of "gladiator raises sword not to greet the crowds, but to challenge the emperor"
