Captain Marvel (now Shazam) was first. Originally he was Fawcet comics' competitor to DC's superman. Fawcet went under and DC acquired the Fawcet characters sometime years later. There was either no copyright or the copyright ran out and so Marvel comics took the opportunity to use the name for their superhero Captain Marvel, causing the original Captain Marvel to be referred to as "Shazam" in legal branding/licensing (though he is still called captain marvel in the comics themselves). Before this whole DC reboot a few years back, Captain Marvel became the new Shazam (who is the wizard that granted him his powers - thus why he has to shout his name to transform) but idk if that's still canon. It's all pretty confusing, I admit
