The director didn’t choose to make the shooter look ambiguous so the viewer has to "figure it out" who he actually is, he made him look ambiguous because the shooter could've been anybody.

one of the few aspects of the movie that keeps it from being 100% rage-inducing for me. there's some unrelated character moments that i really liked peppered around the film too like theo talking with his wife and the main character's old friends providing sanctuary for his son

i feel like that's a positive point to the movie's direction though. the ambiguity it portrays puts audience members more believably into the shoes of the townspeople, raising suspicion about the protagonist's innocence despite the fact that it is explicitly shown to the audience that he didn't do anything. it perfectly engenders the hysterical mindset that it portrays in the movie into the audience members themselves.
