gonna watch first man tonight. how does it compare? i thought whiplash was 9/10 and la la land flawless

It's absolute kino

strong 7.5 out of 10
the car crash is ridiculous and contrived, has a good beginning, saggy middle section and a strong finish
Leads are good, oscar was deserved for JK but it is overrated

It had awesome homo overtones

loved it

how is the car crash contrived? it seems perfectly believable given the circumstances. andrew was desperately rushing back to get his drumsticks, knowing everything he cared for was on the line. he's not gonna be paying attention to traffic - it's entirely plausible he gets t-boned at an intersection

accident - believable, aftermath - no

>Chazelle was involved in a serious car accident in the third week of shooting and was hospitalized with possible concussion, but he returned to filming the next day to finish the film on time

Honest question that has bugged me for a while bout the protagonist.
>Did he "lose" the folder of the jewish drummer on purpose and therefore engineer his "chance"?

the teacher contrived it

I always thought JK Simmons stole it to fuck with him and to see if had what it takes.

So he just walked by, came up with some bizarre scheme and risking to screw his own band, by assuming that one of them had memorized it? Makes no sense.

So he self-inserted and changed the story? Even worse.

best movie soundtrack of all time imo

He was a weird and extrem guy

And remember that he doesn't give a fuck about fucking his band's live performance in the end, just to fuck with Andrew.

he didn't assume
he knew

As much as Id like to believe that, that would imply that hed wanted for the protagonist to be the next GREAT from the start, which he clearly didnt.

he was a sadist and liked going Gordon Ramsey on everyone
the fact that the boy stepped up didn't mean he liked him more or thought of him as the one or whatever the fuck

Then again, youre contradicting yourself. First and foremost he cared about being the best and winning his competitions. By risking his "win" on some weird sadistic hunch, hes going against his character UNLESS he genuinely believes that the protagonist is the next Buddy Rich.

What do you think of this critique?

This is Spinal Tap.

he had little risk aversion and it paid off until it didn't and he got fired because he had made someone an hero the previous year
sure he was winning and had the tightest band but the risk reward was way off

Can't really argue against it.
Still a good movie though.

It was a pretentious piece of shit. "I'm playing drums and my hands are bleeding!" JK Simmons carried the entire film on his shoulders.
>not a good jazz film
>not a good drama film
Just a good JK Simmons film.

it's 2019 and STILL no one cares what you think

fuck off

why do you care so much? is this movie your boyfriend, queerboy?

>5 years
Jesus Christ my youth just slipped by me like it was nothing. What the fuck

if something went wrong he would just return the folder and joke about fucking their sisters or something, there is no losing for this guy there

just that no one cares about your opinion
not here or in real life

fuck off

You apparently do. :3

Who the fuck would want to watch a jazz film?

But you're right, Simmons completely carried it, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as good without him.

Shut the fuck up already incel

>contiinuty error in the first scene
good lord

The ending was kino. Cant say the same for the rest. I'm a drummer myself and some of the drumming parts are pretty cringe.

>Dude push yourself to the limit lmao

>Musicfags go through all that mental torture
>Only to perform for people at a club who doze off or play on their cellphones for most of it

When your film poster is full of critic blurbs you know it’s a shit movie

>and then they get laid

In all seriousness though, First Reformed and Climax from last year alone were better than Whiplash. Still a great film though.

>it's been 5 years
I remember watching it a bit later, close to the finals and preparing for College. A skip year to retake them, and lots of mistakes that followed, and... I'm nowhere near where I thought I'd be... Christ, I fucked up...

This movie looks like reddit incarnate. That alone is enough reason to stay the fuck away
